Job Opportunity : Journeyman Electrician

This position is a Journeyman Electrician role within the Facility Management Service, Electric Shop at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Syracuse, New York. The responsibilities include installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and testing new and existing electrical wires, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Major duties include :

• Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls.
• Interpreting basic electronic terms and symbols when reading technical / system diagrams and schematics.
• Applying a variety of electrical formulas, tables, charts, and color codes in order to mount, ground, and install wiring and equipment for electrical / electronic systems.
• Determining and placing distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installing wiring couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices.
• Inspecting electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers.
• Identifying electrical problems using a variety of testing devices.
• Interpreting and applying state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code.
• Tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations.
• Performing other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule : M-F 7 : 00am to 3 : 30pm with rotating evenings from 2 : 30pm to 11 : 00pm.

Physical Requirements : Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequent lifting and carrying of tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 40 pounds.

Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
