Position Overview

The Director of High School Virtual Learning Programming oversees all facets of programming and support for the high school Virtual Learning Program, catering to approximately 25-50 students.

This role is based in Washington, DC, requiring in-person three days a week, along with frequent travel for home visits to individual students and families, and a whole-child approach to programming.

This role is exempt and will report to the Director of the Virtual Learning Program (VLP).

Key Responsibilities

Student and Family Engagement, Support, & Outreach

  • Collaborate with highs school families and staff to identify potential students for the VLP
  • Create a seamless intake process for the students that includes an in-person in-depth interview with both students and families as well as a review of all existing data for each student.
  • Coordinate with HS compliance teams and the Director of Virtual Systems & School Support Initiatives to facilitate the enrollment of students in the VLP
  • Track attendance data for each student and intervene immediately if there are any attendance concerns
  • Develop a user-friendly family-facing webpage to serve as the primary resource for inquiries about programming and equipment.
  • Ensure each family / student has the necessary hardware, software, internet access to be successful in the program
  • Conduct weekly family office hours for any questions or concerns from HS VLP families
  • Identify and implement personalized wraparound services for each student and guardian using all available resources and city-wide services

Direct Student Support

  • Facilitate two advisory meetings daily for all of the students - one in the morning and one in the afternoon to check in, take attendance, and problem solve any issues
  • Act as the advisor for each student
  • Create individual success plans for each student, crafting individual success plans tailored to their unique needs
  • Organize monthly family meetings ensuring the inclusion of the student, to foster seamless communication. Meet with students in the home or at local agencies (eg a library) on a regular basis to connect with students
  • Monitor student academic progress daily and intervene immediately if students are falling behind
  • Collaborate with existing KCP + LCP high school staff members to coordinate content support.
  • Set up weekly content office hours with existing staff members
  • Collaborate with the Student Support Team (SST) on any necessary accommodations and partner with special education staff to provide accommodations

Mental Health Support / Support for Safety-Related Transfers

  • Identify community- based supports for high schools students in the DMV area
  • Refer students to community-based supports as deemed necessary
  • Ensure that students who have entered the program for safety-related reasons have access to counseling and mental health services, either through the school-based staff or through community-based supports
  • Develop plans for students to transition back to in-person schools when safety concerns have abated
  • Monitor students upon the return to in-person schools to ensure a successful transition
  • Be available for crisis prevention and crisis support

Curriculum Identification, Enrollment and Support

  • Identify rigorous, high-quality online curriculum for the High School VLP
  • Enroll students in appropriate classes and make necessary accommodations to ensure student success.
  • Make any necessary accommodations to the curriculum to ensure student success
  • Work with curriculum providers to make sure to fully maximize the use of the curriculum
  • Support the ongoing rostering for all EdTech programs at VLP including holding weekly new student orientation meetings throughout the year
  • Establish and manage a system as the primary point of contact for registrar, counselor, and school enrollment requests, including interactions with CFSA agents when necessary, and handling enrollment verifications for families.
  • Assist families with transitions back to in-person school when appropriate
  • Foster in all students that fact they can achieve great things and work closely with the college counseling and KIPP Forward staff to prepare all students for college and career success

Test Coordination

  • Act as the test coordinator for all major assessments, including MAP and PARCC testing.
  • Develop schedules for testing activities, ensuring efficient coordination.
  • Formulate PARCC testing groups and lead as the test coordinator for in-person PARCC testing.

Additional Responsibilities as Assigned

Qualifications

  • Commitment to equity
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 3 years management experience is required (as a dean, vice principal, or principal)
  • Experience managing and supporting cross-functional teams required
  • 5-8 years of K-12 experience preferred
  • Experience as a school leader is preferred
  • Experience as a high school teacher or leader preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with various stakeholders
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Strong, team player and possession of customer service orientation. Solutions-oriented.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, non-profit environment
  • Passion for education reform and the belief that every child can succeed

Benefits and Compensation

KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package :

The anticipated starting salary for this position is $112,042-$138,403. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive.

When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.

  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 10 paid sick days, 12 paid holidays, paid Thanksgiving week break, winter break, spring break, and summer break.

This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.

  • All employees who use public transit through WMATA are eligible for pre-tax deductions for transportation costs.
  • This position must be in-person three days a week given the nature of the role. The in-person days will be determined by the Director of the VLP.
