Construction Inspector - Capital Improvement

Description of Duties
Inspects the construction of a wide variety of airport improvements, utilities projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, agreements for work, and may provide construction inspection support. Documents daily progress of the work, prepares monthly progress payment request, tracks various changes, verifies time and material work, measures and documents job quantities. Documentation and information retrieval may require computer literacy skills. Construction Inspectors must have the ability to set priorities, make decisions and work effectively with minimal supervision, deal tactfully with LAWA stakeholders, contractors, construction workers, the public and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.
Position Description Summary
The position of the Construction Inspector will support LAWA's construction inspection and work as a member of LAWA Quality Assurance & Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWA's Tenant Improvement Program primarily focusing on building disciplines.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years' experience performing inspections of large scale Public Works type projects.
- Clear understanding and interpretation of LA City Building Code, ADA requirements and local jurisdiction code.
- Pass a background check and possess a LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start.
- Ability to walk extremely long distances during the shift; climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, and crawl into areas related to terminal construction.
- Availability to work day, swing, modified, night, or weekend shifts as dictated by the contractor's schedule.
- Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic contract documents including change orders, submittals, RFIs, and inspection reports.
- Training in fall protection equipment, confined space awareness, Cal OSHA 30-hour training, NFPA 70E certification (for electrical inspections).
- Preferred certifications : ICC certifications, Deputy Inspector Licenses.
Responsibilities
Perform inspections related to building construction including demolition, excavations, structural backfill, concrete work, sewer & storm drain inspection, framing, drywall, finishes, and fire-rated components.Conduct comprehensive daily inspections across building and terminal construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes and project specifications.Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, change orders.Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports detailing observed construction activities.Verify contractor compliance with local jurisdiction, building codes, and LAWA proprietary standards.Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies.Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities as needed.Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on approved schedule of values.Hardware / Software Knowledge
Knowledge of project management information software such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PM Web, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam.Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic contract documents efficiently.Education / Training
5 years or more of inspection experience on large-scale public works projects.30-hour Cal-OSHA training received within the last 4 years.Work Time
