Position Description
The NWI Technician plays a key role in the installation, maintenance, and technical troubleshooting of Mesonet (weather) stations, rain gauges and radar stations across the region. This position requires strong technical skills, the ability to work independently in the field, and effective communication with landowners and project stakeholders. The technician ensures that environmental data streams remain accurate, timely, and reliable, directly supporting critical weather monitoring and research operations.

The National Wind Institute (NWI) has evolved from its traditional singular focus on wind hazards to three main research pillars of Energy Systems, Atmospheric Measurement & Simulation, and Wind Engineering. Though all three of these pillars focus on distinct issues, they also maintain common ground via cross cutting themes. All research seeks to benefit communities at micro and macro scales.

Major / Essential Functions
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required : Ability to work independently in the field in various conditions to maintain mesonet weather stations.
Ability to drive long distances in a safe manner; must be eligible and approved to drive TTU vehicles.
Strong organizational skillset with a proven ability to plan and manage activities independently, with
minimal guidance. Strong verbal and written communication skillset. Tolerance for long workdays (<
8 hours).
Preferred : Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems. Basic knowledge of data acquisition and
sensor systems. Basic knowledge of computer systems.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with 1 to 3 years of experience in field-based technical work. Additional experience, instead of education, can be considered on a year-for-year basis.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
This position is designated as involving access to critical infrastructure systems and / or research, as defined by Texas Executive Order GA-48. As such, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check prior to employment. Employees are required to comply with all applicable state and federal regulations related to the protection of critical infrastructure. Ongoing employment is dependent upon maintaining eligibility for access and successfully passing periodic security and compliance reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
Eligibility to drive TTU vehicles is a requirement.
