Position description

The Center for Smart Infrastructure at the University of California Berkeley develops and tests emerging technologies such as intelligent systems and networks, remote sensing and monitoring, and data analytics for decision-making. It houses a large-scale testing facility to develop intelligent infrastructure system components and trial smart construction and maintenance methods using remote monitoring and robotics technologies.

The Center is seeking an Assistant / Associate / Full Project Scientist Researcher to conduct interdisciplinary research on the development of a digital hydro-twin for diverse water management applications in face of climate change. The research will inform the development of methods to better assess compounding hazards and implications of engineering and land use planning decisions in increasing or reducing vulnerability.

The successful candidate will work under the guidance of leadership to coordinate efforts on an international project to select an optimal US application case, aid in documenting existing methods to integrate different dimensions of vulnerability in flood risk management and collaborate with PIs and Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs) involved in developing a hydro-twin for levee management in the pilot case study. The candidate will assist in compiling necessary data from different agencies, and help to organize a workshop in California with the community and relevant experts to explore the capabilities of digital twins to better assess risk and to incorporate equity concerns, organize periodic project meetings and coordinate with international project partners to develop future iterations of the digital hydro-twin. The candidate will also work to help identify potential funding sources, contribute to writing grant proposals for additional funding, contribute to writing joint publications for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals, and disseminate research results.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

PhD or equivalent international degree

Preferred qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Planning, or related discipline.
• Previous experience in interdisciplinary projects.
• Have an understanding of spatial modeling, hydrologic modeling, and Federal and California State regulation and flood policy.
• Publication record in the area of flood management, river management, flood regulations.
• Demonstrated experience with archival analysis, GIS, policy analysis.
• Strong background on human management and mapping of flood-prone lands.
• An understanding of watershed and surface models.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team and build effective relationships.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to document findings in reports and publications.
• Experience in disseminating research findings to academic audience (e.g., conferences, workshops) and to the general public (e.g., media, policy forums, professional associations).
