ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Windsor Police Department is comprised of six divisions : Community Engagement, Investigations, Patrol, Property & Evidence, Records, and Special Operations. The department aims to strengthen community relationships by recruiting individuals who reflect its vision and are committed to serving everyone with integrity.
The Police Department provides the following services :
- Investigations : Conducts follow-ups and prepares cases for appropriate clearance.
- Patrol : Keeps watch and responds to emergencies 24 / 7.
- Property & Evidence : Maintains integrity of evidence and / or property.
- Records : Gathers crime data, processes, maintains, and releases records.
- Special Operations : Handles commercial vehicle inspections, Municipal Court security, and supports at special events; part of the Town's traffic safety efforts.
The Windsor Police Department recently completed a new 43,000-square-foot facility to accommodate growth, with training spaces, a multipurpose conference area, evidence-processing facilities, and an onsite gym.
COMPENSATION
Officer Step Plan 2025 with annual and hourly wages by step. All applicants must pass the Department background, psychological evaluation, drug, medical, and physical screening to be issued a final offer of employment.
Annual salaries range by step, e.g., Step 1 : $80,080; Step 2 : $84,284; Step 3 : $88,709; Step 4 : $93,588; Step 5 : $98,735; Step 6 : $104,166.Hourly equivalents : Step 1 $38.50; Step 2 $40.52; Step 3 $42.65; Step 4 $44.99; Step 5 $47.47; Step 6 $50.08.Work Schedule : This position requires shift work with am or pm start times, rotating days, and working days / evenings / weekends as schedule dictates.
NATURE OF WORK
As a member of the Police Department, individuals perform a variety of law enforcement activities for the Town of Windsor, including patrolling, enforcing ordinances, state and municipal laws, and pursuing or preventing crimes. Work must align with the town's PRIDE philosophy and Equal Opportunity Employment policy.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Individuals work under the direct supervision of the Police Sergeant to carry out duties, functions, roles, and projects in routine and complex circumstances.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Police Officer role includes assignments and duties determined by the town, Department, and legal requirements. The following duties illustrate primary functions and are not all-inclusive :
Participate in all normal shift activities, including enforcing laws, issuing citations, making arrests, administering first aid, responding to hazardous material incidents, and completing forms and reports.Patrol assigned areas by foot, motorcycle, patrol car, or bicycle to enforce laws, prevent and discover crimes, investigate, maintain order, and assist in non-criminal matters.Familiarize self with the community and its members.Issue written citations for traffic and other violations.Inspect public establishments requiring licenses to ensure compliance.Provide credible testimony in court.Mediates civil disputes and other non-criminal disagreements.Affect an arrest using appropriate force as necessary; process and transport individuals in custody.Prepare investigative reports and related documentation.Exercise independent judgment on use of force, detainment, and searches.Safely operate police vehicles in various conditions and emergencies.Communicate effectively with dispatchers and officers using computers and radios.Gather information from victims, suspects, witnesses, and informants.Handle weapons and equipment safely and proficiently, meeting certification standards.Perform searches, including walking long distances and detaining suspects as needed.Communicate with the public, mediate disputes, and advise on legal rights.Communicate in court and formal settings, including public speaking.Detect and collect evidence related to offenses, often in hazardous conditions.Perform rescue functions at accidents or emergencies.Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents and prepare necessary documents (citations, affidavits, warrants).Interact cooperatively with coworkers and the community; maintain attendance and meet training requirements.OTHER DUTIES

Equipment and materials include vehicles, weapons systems, computers, radios, AED and first responder equipment, duty gear, ballistic vest, and general office equipment.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The job involves physical activities such as climbing, lifting, standing, driving, and exposure to extreme conditions. It is considered safety-sensitive due to potential risks. The position may require working in extreme weather and hazardous conditions, and may involve exposure to infectious diseases and prisoners.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND FORMAL TRAINING
Must have a high school diploma or GED.LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
