Description

The Assistant Director of Development plays an integral role in strengthening the philanthropic program for the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Neurology, an area with several cutting-edge clinical and research programs that depend on philanthropic support.

The Assistant Director oversees multiple fundraising efforts for the Neurology Department and is responsible for raising between $1M-$2M annually.

Working under the direction of the Senior Director of Development and working closely with Neurology faculty, Development colleagues, hospital physicians and nurses, the Assistant Director will manage a portfolio of 165 prospects and donors at the $250K or higher level.

This individual will be responsible for the strategic identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts prospects and donors who are at various stages in their relationship with the hospital.

The Department of Neurology

The Department of Neurology is home to world-class research facilities for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS as well as stroke and epilepsy, and pediatric conditions including Leukodystrophy, Muscular Dystrophy and Tuberous Sclerosis.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Actively manage a portfolio of 165 prospects and donors at the $250K or higher level for assigned clinical areas. Formulate, document and execute prospect and donor moves management strategies.

Conduct a minimum of 60 total donor meetings and prospect qualifications through both proactive and reactive donor identification and engagement.

Successfully solicit and close gifts (outright, life income, bequests, and gifts of assets) working with guidance from supervisor, hospital leadership and senior staff, as appropriate.

Raise between $1M-$2M annually from new and existing donors.Collaborate with colleagues across teams to achieve team and overall Development Office fundraising goals.

Fully document work in the donor database, Blackbaud CRM.Work with prospects to develop and enhance the relationship to and connection with the hospital, ultimately leveraging that relationship to maximize philanthropic giving.

Mass General is currently in a $3 billion-dollar Campaign, therefore Campaign qualifications are expected.

  • Create, maintain and strengthen collaborative relationships with physicians, researchers and administrative directors, as appropriate.
  • Develop an understanding of the breadth of research, clinical, teaching and community service programs within the Department of Neurology.
  • Develop an understanding of all giving opportunities (including planned giving and the annual fund), and cross-team disciplines.
  • Identify, define and maintain a menu of giving opportunities for assigned areas, and collaborate with cross-team partners to produce case statements and proposals.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Prepare and regularly update progress reports.
  • Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods.
  • Assist with recruitment activities as needed.
  • Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Development leadership.
  • Adhere to the mission, credo, and standards of behavior of Mass General.

Qualifications

Qualifications

This position requires 3-5 years of experience and a bachelor’s degree.

We are looking for someone who has a comprehensive understanding of major gifts fundraising principles and practices, knowledge of health care, demonstrated ability to build relationships both internally and with prospects and donors and solicit prospects or donors for philanthropic support.

The ideal candidate will also possess the following skills, abilities and competencies :

  • Proven professional growth, preferably in an academic medical center or university
  • An understanding of Campaign fundraising
  • Experience devising and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies for donors at all stages of engagement, from newly identified prospects to loyal donors
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Display humility and compassion with prospects and physicians
  • Active listening skills and the ability to influence others
  • Proven ability to motivate, engage and work collaboratively with diverse audiences in a variety of situations and to handle difficult situations with grace and a sense of humor
  • Ability to think strategically and manage multiple individual and team projects effectively
