Job description

The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking an engineer, geologist, or hydrogeologist with specialized expertise in sediment remediation to join our Seattle office. In this hybrid role, you will support the Assessment and Remediation business unit and lead work on complex sediment remediation projects. Assignments will include leading activities associated with designing and managing remedial dredging programs; leading sediment investigations; developing conceptual site models; preparing feasibility studies and alternatives analyses; performing remedial design (including capping, dredging, and bank stabilization); coordinating structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and water-quality evaluations; and supporting the permitting and implementation of sediment remedies.

Responsibilities may also include managing multidisciplinary teams; preparing technical work plans, reports, and design packages; developing cost estimates and scopes of work; coordinating with contractors during construction; monitoring field activities (such as turbidity, structural movement, and geotechnical performance); and summarizing results for regulatory review. Work will also involve regulatory and stakeholder engagement with agencies such as the U.S. EPA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state environmental departments, and local entities.

The person in this position may help lead business development efforts including building and maintaining client relationships, contributing to marketing campaigns, performing client outreach, fostering project opportunities, contributing to proposals and presentations, professional networking, and sharing Barr’s sediment-remediation capabilities with existing and potential clients.

The ideal candidate for this position is a clear and confident communicator who thrives in collaborative and independent settings. They are strategic, adaptable, and proactive, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills that support sound decision-making in complex sediment environments. They bring a high level of ownership and accountability to their work, with the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a focus on quality and detail. This individual demonstrates strong leadership and mentoring capabilities, actively supports the growth of team members, and builds lasting client relationships rooted in trust and service. Above all, they value teamwork, integrity, and delivering impactful, forward-thinking environmental solutions.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: lead complex sediment investigation, feasibility study, and remedial design efforts using advanced technical expertise. Apply a strong understanding of dredging, capping, geotechnical and hydraulic considerations, contaminated sediment behavior, and regulatory frameworks to deliver effective, site-specific solutions.

  • Project management: oversee multidisciplinary teams and manage scopes, schedules, budgets, and quality for sediment remediation projects. Support permitting, stakeholder coordination, and construction-phase services while providing mentorship and guidance to junior staff.

  • Business development: identify and pursue new sediment remediation opportunities, contribute to proposals and marketing efforts, and actively participate in networking to grow Barr’s presence in sediment, riverine, and waterfront remediation markets.

  • Problem solving: evaluate complex physical, chemical, and biological processes influencing sediment behavior; integrate large data sets; and develop creative, compliant, and constructible remediation strategies. Anticipate and navigate technical, regulatory, and logistical challenges throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Communication: develop high-quality technical deliverables, including work plans, feasibility studies, design packages, and construction documentation. Communicate complex sediment-related information effectively to clients, contractors, regulators, and diverse internal and external audiences.

  • Interpersonal savvy: build and sustain strong relationships with clients, regulatory personnel, and internal teams. Collaborate across disciplines, including geotechnical, structural, hydrology, ecology, and construction, to align technical approaches with client goals while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr’s Seattle, Washington, office.

  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (including up to 10%; project needs will vary seasonally and over time).

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in environmental, civil, or geological engineering; geology; hydrogeology; or a related discipline.

  • Experience: 8 or more years of relevant experience, including demonstrated experience in sediment remediation, dredging, feasibility studies, or sediment remedial design.

  • Licenses/certifications: Registered Professional Engineer or Geologist or the ability to become registered within one year.

  • Software: strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets. Familiarity with the Microsoft Suite.

  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Master’s degree in engineering, geology, or a related discipline.

  • 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) certification.

  • Previous consulting experience, particularly in sediment remediation or waterfront and/or riverine systems.

  • Experience with sediment transport modeling, cap modeling, or construction-phase monitoring.

  • Registered certified consultant.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $115,000–$155,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
