Job Title: MRI Technologist I Profession: MRI Technologist Specialty: - Duration: - Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Required License: ARRT (R)(MR) Certifications: BLS Required Must-Have: - Description: The MRI Technologist I performs procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. This position operates MRI scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency. The equipment includes scanners, post-processing stations/programs, IV contrast injectors, O2 and suction equipment, patient transport, and patient monitoring equipment. The technologist examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient. Orders are referred and questioned to the Radiologist before performing the exam. The technologist contacts the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. Proper identification is established using two patient identifiers to assist patients while offering a brief explanation of the procedures. Patients are prepared for the procedure with a full explanation documented on appropriate worksheets. The technologist interviews patients for a complete medical history. Reviews of in-patients, ER, and outpatients EMRs are conducted to obtain pertinent clinical history. Medical history is recorded on requisitions. The technologist correlates other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed. Responsibility for the exam is assumed from the beginning until the completion of dictated results. IV contrast is prepared and administered according to departmental protocols. On request, the contrast type and amount are recorded. The technologist evaluates the technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed. Abnormal anatomy is recognized, and any additional, reconstructed images or measurements are processed as instructed. Basic patient care functions are performed as necessary. Appropriate nursing personnel are informed of any changes in the patient’s condition. Life support measures are initiated for patients when necessary. Assistance is provided during medical emergencies, including code blue procedures. MRI scanning is performed while assisting Physicians or PAs during invasive procedures. Proper sterile techniques are practiced in the preparation of necessary supplies. All invasive procedures are performed in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures. The technologist is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner. Principles of radiation safety are practiced for self, employees, patients, and family members. Appropriate radiation safety standards are followed. Malfunctioning equipment is reported to the department director, manager, supervisor, and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. Knowledge and skills required to work safely in environments that may create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease are maintained. Hospital fire and safety procedures are adhered to. All in-service classes are attended, and required safety modules are completed. The radiology computer system is operated, including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies. Contrast administration is documented in the MAR. Assigned work areas are maintained in a neat and orderly fashion. Areas are kept completely stocked, and cleanliness is promoted in the workplace. Assistance is provided to other medical personnel when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan. Knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for both staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields is maintained.
