Job Description

Element Science, Inc. is a medical device and digital health company focused on developing solutions at the intersection of clinical-grade wearables, machine learning algorithms, and lifesaving therapies in order to address leading causes of death and hospitalization in patients with heart disease, primarily as they transition from the hospital-to-home. By putting the needs of patients and physicians first, our personalized digital devices, which are designed for function, comfort, and ease-of-use, aim to redefine the paradigm of care for these patients. Our first product, a wearable patch defibrillator, is initially targeted at treating the more than 500,000 patients in the US with an elevated temporary risk of potentially experiencing a lethal heart rhythm. Headquartered in San Francisco, our funders include Third Rock Ventures, Google Ventures, Deerfield Healthcare, Qiming Venture Partners USA, Cormorant Asset Management, and Invus Opportunities.

This role combines deep technical expertise in analog, digital, and high-voltage board design with strong leadership in cross-functional project execution. The engineer will drive hardware bring-up, system integration, and verification activities; manage critical vendors; and collaborate closely with Systems, Mechanical, Firmware, and Manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet performance, cost, and regulatory requirements. The position also involves mentoring junior engineers, contributing to design reviews, and supporting commercial-stage manufacturing and field activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Lead electrical design workstreams within multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring scope, schedule, and deliverables are met.
  • Drive technical decision-making, balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and characterize designs through bench testing, system integration, and the creation of supporting test fixtures.
  • Conduct dry-run verification tests and provide guidance on design verification test protocols.
  • Support EMC / EMI testing and compliance activities, including preparation, execution, and troubleshooting to ensure designs meet applicable IEC standards such as IEC 60601.
  • Document design descriptions and engineering analysis to support Manufacturing and Quality.
  • Qualify critical alternate components as necessary that meet design needs.
  • Perform failure analysis and document investigations to aid Manufacturing builds.
  • Provide technical support for cross-functional teams, including Systems, Mechanical, Firmware, and Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Facilitate effective collaboration across disciplines, aligning design activities with project milestones and product requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide peer review of designs and documentation.
  • Support Commercial Stage activities including manufacturing support, New Product Introduction programs, and Field Failure Analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • MSEE with 7+ years of experience or BSEE with 10+ years of experience.
  • Electrical design, test, and sustaining experience for products with microprocessors, FPGAs, analog, and high-voltage electronics.
  • Experience with Altium or other PCB design packages.
  • Expertise using benchtop equipment for testing analog and power electronics.
  • Experience with board bring-up, debug, and integration of embedded systems including ability to modify and compile C code for microcontrollers to support hardware testing.
  • Working knowledge of digital signal processing concepts for electrophysiology and other sensor data.
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis, automation, and hardware test scripting.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work effectively across functions and within cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with medical standards and verification to those standards.
  • Preferred experience with QMS for development of Class III medical devices.
  • Preferred experience with project leadership, including coordination with multiple disciplines from concept through manufacturing transfer.
