The Instrument Engineers at Ascend CHB supports a 24 hour 7 day a week multi-unit production facility. They are responsible for the selection, specification and care of instrumentation used to measure and control process variables and conditions. The Instrument Engineers work closely with Maintenance and Operations to identify causes and solutions to instrument failures that impact production and cost. The Instrument Engineers are assigned to the Reliability department. The department is responsible for developing equipment care strategies, providing technical guidance and recommending continuous improvements. The Instrument Engineers are site subject matter experts and are expected to ensure standards, codes and RAGAGEP are followed to meet site and Process Safety requirements.

TARGETED OUTCOMES

  • Improve the reliability of instrument systems that affect process safety and production targets.
  • Develop and improve asset care strategies that will improve MTBF, lower maintenance cost and increase on-stream reliability.
  • Supports the development of obsolescence and Long-Range Plans, which includes identification of Bad Actor equipment and development of mitigation plans.
  • Develop maintenance and reliability work scope for plant turnarounds to meet site objectives.
  • Encourage and promote a culture that is proactive and promotes solving problems.
  • Subject matter expert (SME) for instrument engineering who provides technical guidance and support.
  • Collaborates with other SMEs across the organization to develop, promote, and implement short and long term improvements and common standards.

  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support a 24 / 7 production facility with a strong safety culture.
  • Provide guidance, oversight and expertise for the selection, care, functionality and maintainability of instrumentation related to batch and continual chemical production, process safety, mechanical Integrity.
  • Provide recommendations and justification for equipment upgrades and input into the plant capital plan.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing work scope for daily maintenance, turn-around and equipment outages.
  • Assist and lead compliance and regulatory audits related to the requirements of permits, codes and standards, such as safety instrumented systems, quality and environmental.
  • Lead and conduct instrument failure analysis and develop corrective actions to meet site and production metrics.
  • Assist Maintenance and Operations with high level of troubleshooting when needed.
  • Technical reviewer for Management of Change (MOC) processes, specifically focusing site compliance with all applicable codes, regulations and RAGAGEP.
  • Champion the instrument predictive / preventative maintenance program.
  • Ensure compliance with technical engineering standards and specification.
  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 3 plus years as an Instrument Engineer in a refinery or chemical manufacturing facility.
  • Selecting, reviewing and approving instrument specifications.
  • Reviewing and updating documentation such as job plans, recommendations, capital project scope and MOC actions.
  • Developing and implementing Reliability improvements.
  • Supporting Safety Instrumented Systems, Environmental and Quality requirements.
  • REQUIRED SKILLS

    Onsite role with performance expectations

  • Applying Reliability Centered Maintenance best practices.
  • Working knowledge of PHA's, Safety Instrumented Systems, and MOCs.
  • Root Cause Analysis facilitation
  • Intrepid and apply internal Standards and RAGAGEP.
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize workload, and meet timeline requirements.
  • Strategic mindset, creative, flexible, detailed oriented, analytical, strong problem solver and self-starter.
  • Candidate must have good technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong computer skills and a working knowledge of SAP is a plus.
  • Operates in a professional office environment within or outside of an industrial plant environment.
  • Willing and able to perform independently and in team based environment.
  • Willing and able to move throughout all areas of the facility.
