At CHS, we are creating connections to empower agriculture.

Summary

CHS Government Affairs
The government affairs team works to educate, inform, and influence government decision makers on issues important to our business, agriculture and rural America. Government Affairs promotes a political and regulatory environment favorable to CHS’s growth and innovation, while managing legislative and regulatory risk.

Responsibilities
We are seeking a Director of State Government Affairs to develop, lead and execute strategies to influence state-level public policy and legislation. The Director will identify legislative and regulatory developments that impact CHS, create opportunities for engagement, and drive positive policy outcomes. This role will report to the Vice President of Government Affairs, with a preference for the Director to be based at headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota (in the greater Twin Cities region).

  • Build and maintain CHS relationships with key government officials and manage state consultants in key operating states
  • Represent and maximize CHS’ involvement in coalitions and trade associations to advance CHS interests and shape their respective agendas.
  • Develop a deep understanding of business priorities to anticipate and provide timely updates and analysis of emerging trends
  • Work with internal teams to evaluate business impact and guide reactive and proactive work on state legislative and regulatory actions
  • Work with issue experts to draft testimony, comments and advance policy positions on priority issues
  • Work collaboratively on advocacy events and high-impact initiatives within the state to ensure a cohesive approach to policy issues and messaging

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Policy, Political Science, Business Administration) or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum of 7+ of managing policy issues at the state and local level (in-house role or combined experience in state government, state lobbying or relevant trade associations)

Additional Qualifications

  • Understanding and deployment of state advocacy and engagement strategies
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
  • An operational mindset for managing internal and external processes and experience providing strategic counsel to senior leaders
  • A collaborative approach to working across teams. Our team’s success depends on effective coordination and drawing on the resources of the full government affairs team
  • Familiarity with public policy issues related to agriculture and energy are a plus.
  • Hybrid work schedule with 3 days a week in office at the Inver Grove Heights Corporate and up to 15% travel.
  • Pre-employment screening is based on the job requirements and industry guidelines and may or may not be required for the position.
