Purpose
The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the Rock Steady Program which includes exercise therapy and support for people with Parkinson's, working to accomplish the goals of the program, including curriculum development, scheduling, delivery, volunteer management, assistance with program promotion and events / outreach coordination and various administrative tasks.
Essential Job Functions Duties and Responsibilities
Research and Development
- Identify and contact PD Specific Programs (Locally and Nationally) including voice therapies, balance challenge techniques, dance, swimming, yoga, tai chi, contact and develop relationships with local groups such as Delay the Disease , Fall Proof , Big and Loud , The Climb , RHI (Rehabilitation Hospital of Indianapolis), request and display flyers for RSB members
- Identify complimentary, corresponding articles, seminars, and online classes on Parkinson's Disease and related conditions, learn through continuing education the process and course of progression of PD, learn and fully understand its symptoms, study common PD medications and their purpose, side effects, and possible effects on trainer-specific concerns such as dehydration, dizziness, cognitive response or behavioral changes (due to the disease itself or medication)
- Study corrective exercise techniques and apply appropriately to classes (and individuals) through specific modification and progression of each exercise. Periodically review NASM corrective exercise training techniques through textbooks and online articles.
- Develop Level-Specific Curriculums (typically a progression / modification of one class per day) focused on a specific sequence of activities : breathing techniques, proper stretching (dynamic and static), proper warm-up, balance challenges, voice activation, boxing-specific circuit training, hydration, cool-down.
- Attend Workshops, Seminars, design and provide demonstrations to local group
- Meet with Regional Director of Operations frequently, and RSB support members, to discuss ways to help maximize our effectiveness while at RSB, whether in an administrative capacity or while teaching in the gym
- Be prepared to discuss Rock Steady with anyone, in any situation, with confidence and authority
- Review and create (as needed) additional metrics for tracking participant progress and referrals to the RSB program.
Classroom Responsibilities
Design Class, print and catalog in workout library (also make copies for members)Clean and disinfect gymRecord attendance for each classDownload / purchase music and assemble Playlists appropriate for each level of class (PD 1-4) considerations; beats per minute, progression as it applies to stretch / warm-up / circuit / cool-down, stretchMake announcements to classWelcome and make introduction of new Members / VisitorsCheck, update, and stock inventory for Member purchasesSet up equipment based on daily CurriculumIdentify immediate member needs and provide appropriate networking opportunities (i.e. care partners in need of counseling, members in need of transportation or outreach)Assist members with putting on gloves, drinking water, tying shoelacesSell inventory, collect payment, process transactionsIdentify specific needs on any day (extra attention to new members and their families, members returning after suffering an injury) in classroom and make necessary changes in Curriculum, if necessaryTeach class with other coachesAssist volunteers, visiting students (Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy students seeking volunteer hours at Rock Steady). Use opportunity of observing many individuals with many levels of PD to teach volunteers about the specific needs of people with PD.Conduct class, teach and assist members proper form (boxing, strength training, weight lifting)Assessment Processing
Contact new member inquiries, schedule assessments via e-mail or phone conversation, place reminder call day before assessmentAssess new members, (consult with program director and determine class Level (1-4), using Assessment data (Fullerton Advanced Balance and Tug Test, Jump Rope Test, Davies Test, Sit-and-Reach Test, Purdue Pegboard Test)Identify "Red Flag" data, discuss special concerns with new members such as cardiac history, osteoporosis, diabetes, etc., make suggestions for necessary modifications before class participationContact volunteers, train volunteers to perform Assessments on new members, schedule "shadowing" daysStudy New Member Information and medical background of Assessment take-in forms, determine class placement, inform new members of class status and schedulingOutreach
Review Membership list to identify "missing" members, place phone calls to "check in" to see why boxers have not been participatingAttend RSB-related special events and participate in community events which feature RSBCorrespond with RSB members, if member is in need of outreach and encouragementCreate marketing strategy for RSB, work with the Regional Sales Director and Parkinson's Program Director in doing soDevelop collaterals accordinglyRequired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, and accept constructive criticism. Must be able to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies / personnel, and the general public. Must be able to work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and potentially hostile people within the facility. Must be able to speak, write and understand English in a manner that is sufficient for effective communication with supervisors, employees, residents, and families.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree preferred
Working knowledge of physical and cognitive disabilities
Personable and able to work with people with Parkinson's and their care partners
Well-organized, multi-tasking skills
Proven leadership ability
Experience in managing a budget
Comfortable marketing and speaking to the public
Understanding of risk-management skills
Licensing / Certifications
Certifications in personal training and / or exercise sports science
Current CPR, first aid certification
