Under the supervision of the Dean o

f the

Community Education Division or designee, to teach English as a Second Language / English Language Learners (ESL / ELL) in the classroom and in a workshop to a diverse learning population that includes immigrants and refugees;

and to assist with ESL learners' acculturation and integration into the community.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and deliver instruction and perform teaching-related activities.
  • Manage the classroom / laboratory.
  • Develop curriculum and monitor and revise as appropriate to maintain course effectiveness; assist in program evaluation.
  • Manage equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Assess student performance and advise students on academic issues.
  • Collaborate with advisory committee in program area.
  • Attend departmental and institutional meetings.
  • Promote the education / training program, participate in efforts to recruit and retain students, and participate in efforts to market MATC.
  • Support student organizations and activities.
  • Develop relationships with business and industry.
  • Complete program evaluation and follow-up.
  • Maintain certification, continue professional development and stay current in field.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Only those who meet all of the base minimum requirements listed below will be considered.

Minimum Education Requirements :

Must have a b achelor’s degree or higher* with at least 15 coursework credits (graduate or undergraduate level) in the areas listed below :

  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
  • Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL)
  • Linguistics
  • Applied Linguistics
  • English Language (including semantics, syntax, phonology, etc.)
  • English Language Teaching
  • English Language Learning and Teaching
  • Adult ESL Education
  • Curriculum and Instruction in ESL
  • Foreign Language Instruction
  • Second Language Acquisition Instruction

Per Higher Learning Commission Determining Qualified Faculty Assumed Practice B.2.

Masters degree highly preferred

Minimum Occupational Experience Requirements :

  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of full-time or two (2) years of part-time experience as an English as a Second Language / English Language Leaning (ESL / ELL) instructor specifically.
  • Native or native-like fluency in English

Online Information Management Systems - Experience with INFOnline or other online information management systems used for student advising, student programs, grading, class schedules and rosters

Blackboard - Experience with Blackboard or other web-based course - management systems

Technology-based Instruction - Experience with technology-based instructional delivery systems including SMART symposium, interactive touch screen monitors, LCD projectors, DVD players and / or other classroom technology

Emerging Technologies - Experience with social networking applications)
