Position Description :
We are seeking an experienced Civil / Geotechnical Engineer to support operations at a major pumped storage hydroelectric facility in Warm Springs, VA . This critical role ensures the structural integrity, performance, and safety of the plants civil infrastructure including high-pressure tunnels, dams, drainage systems, and related earthworks.
This position will be filled at the Engineer, Senior Engineer, or Staff Engineer level, depending on the candidates qualifications and experience. You'll be joining a high-performing team focused on reliability, regulatory compliance, and safety in a complex industrial and utility environment .

Key Responsibilities :
- Lead the monitoring and analysis of geotechnical data , including instrumentation and tunnel drainage systems.
- Conduct civil structure, dam, and tunnel inspections; assess structural integrity and develop maintenance / repair plans.
- Oversee the development of specifications for equipment and instrumentation used in geotechnical applications.
- Perform slope stability analyses using both hand calculations and engineering software.
- Prepare and submit technical documentation, including regulatory reports, emergency action plans , and engineering reviews.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for station management on dam safety, geotechnical issues, and civil engineering best practices.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external contractors on inspections, compliance, and project execution.
- Support long-term capital planning and civil infrastructure upgrades.
- Perform fieldwork in rugged environments and support safety procedures related to confined spaces, elevated work, and tunnel access .
Required Skills & Experience :
Engineer (Entry-Level / Mid-Level) :
2+ years of civil or geotechnical engineering experience.Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program .Strong understanding of engineering principles, codes, and standards.Ability to conduct independent fieldwork in remote or rugged conditions.Proficient in engineering software and data analysis tools.Valid driver's license required.Knowledge of dam safety and FERC-regulated infrastructure is preferred.Senior Engineer :
5+ years of relevant civil / geotechnical experience.Proven leadership in engineering projects or cross-functional teams.Proficiency in advanced engineering tools and modeling software.Experience working with FERC, dam safety programs , and hydroelectric facilities.Strong technical writing and communication skills.Staff Engineer :
8+ years of experience in civil or geotechnical engineering.Recognized subject matter expert in dam safety or hydroelectric infrastructure.Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and mentor junior engineers.Extensive field experience in utility, water resources, or energy sectors.High-level proficiency with geotechnical software , instrumentation systems, and regulatory reporting.Education Requirements :
Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (required).Preferred : Focus in Geotechnical Engineering , Hydrology / Hydraulics , or Dam Safety .Engineering Technology degrees are not accepted .A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred and must be obtainable by reciprocity in Virginia if not currently held.Additional Criteria (Required for Job Series Placement) :
To qualify for this engineering position, you must meet one of the following :
Hold a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited U.S. program.Have a 4-year engineering degree from a Washington Accord-recognized international program.Hold a 4-year non-ABET degree plus a masters from an ABET-accredited program in the same discipline.Have a degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology plus a post-grad engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program.Work Environment :
