JOB DUTIES

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Outdoor Recreation Industry Initiative (ORII) continues to grow in both reach and scope for the transformation of Farmington to an outdoor destination. This outdoor oriented staff person will focus on recreational programming, experiences and events for both residents and visitors including monitoring, evaluating and curating our unique trails and recreational offerings. The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining important partner relationships with area outdoor user groups, gathering input on needs, monitoring trail and other amenity user experiences, and helping with city or partner-organized outdoor related event planning and coordinating.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The City of Farmington is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated individual with a passion for the outdoors and being active to continue the growth of the ORII program and the culture it seeks to create.

Works under the supervision and direction of the Director of Parks and Recreation.

Works collaboratively with the Director Economic Development to communicate and implement the strategic priorities of the ORII program to provide recommendations for appropriate actions.

Engages with Farmington area outdoor user groups to encourage collaboration, find shared project potential, and encourage trail and amenity management.

Manages City ORII-designated events including coordination and collaboration across city departments, civic organizations, user groups and volunteers. Works within budget constraints, city policies and procedures, procurement regulations and other related guidelines.

Exercises administrative direction and supervision over assigned support staff, part-time, contracted, seasonal and volunteer personnel either directly or through supervisors.

Provides management and oversight of outdoor recreation amenities including but not limited to the Juniper Basin Recreation Area and the Whitewater Wave Feature.

Collaborates with other community-based outdoor event coordinators to create programming that will attract visitors and business to our outdoor venues.

Using excellent customer service and customer focus skills, establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Develops and maintains contacts with outdoor recreation business and property owners.

Communicates with existing outdoor related businesses to ensure their vitality and support from the City of Farmington ORII Initiative.

Assists with grant applications providing administrative support for budget tracking and reporting purposes.

Makes presentations to supervisors, boards and civic groups on ORII events and initiatives.

Works with Marketing to promote all ORII-related activities and events. Ensures website content stays fresh and relevant in collaboration with Integrated Marketing Communications Manager.

Manages the day-to-day communications to the ORII partners on behalf of the City of Farmington. Monitors and inspects area marketed trails to ensure a curated user experience for both visitors and residents.

Assists in budget preparation and tracking in assigned areas. Assures that assigned area of responsibility are performed within budget, monitors revenues and expenditures, assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time.

Coordinates with Farmington Clean and Beautiful to provide oversight of cleanup events; with emphasis on our major attraction areas (riverfront, Lake Farmington, Glade, etc.).

Establishes a good rapport and communications with the State Outdoor Recreation Department to achieve the mission of the organization and share information regarding funding opportunities with the Economic Development Specialist and area outdoor businesses. Wherever possible, the ORII Coordinator will work to establish partnerships with other community organizations and public agencies / special events.

Acts as a liaison for the outdoor user groups to the City to ensure their needs are met to provide needed public support for trails and outdoor assets.

Researches, develops, proposes, and assists with creating programming for potential events related to the outdoors.

Coordinates special events, trade shows, and other activities as required.

Coordinates and trains volunteers for special events, outdoor events, clean ups and other programs with the City Volunteer Manager

Required to work a varied schedule that may include weekends, holidays and evenings.

Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

Attend monthly after-hours events and programming for the ORII program, especially user group meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Program which includes : pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Graduation with a 4-year degree with three (3) years of related retail or marketing, outdoor experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience working with volunteers desirable.

Experience with trail use desirable.

Ability to ride / walk / drive trails preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in administration and coordination of a volunteer groups and associations a plus.

Ability to build strategic relationships and foster a positive engagement from community members and volunteers.

Ability to establish lines of communication among all levels of organization, from executive to outdoor association members.

Experience in the strategic development of or management of public events a plus.

Working knowledge of personal computers and software; specific knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows or Mac operating system.

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.

Ability to train and motivate volunteer staff.

Ability to accurately record and maintain records.

Ability to effectively meet and interact with the public on behalf of the City.

Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

Ability to follow verbal and / or written instructions.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Extensive background checks required.

Personal computer, including Microsoft Word and Excel software; motor vehicle, calculator, copy machine, telephone, and fax machine.
