Job description

National Campaigns Director

Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest, creative communication and people power to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. In just the past year, we've secured a Global Oceans Treaty to protect wildlife and people who depend on healthy oceans. We persuaded the Biden Administration to phase out single-use plastics from federal operations. And we safeguarded healthy spaces, from national marine sanctuaries to bans on seabed mining to stopping liquefied national gas terminals poisoning Gulf Coast communities. Our work spans more than 50 years of fights and successes.

Greenpeace does not accept funds from any corporations or government entities. The global Greenpeace network is headquartered in the Netherlands, with offices around the world in over fifty countries. Greenpeace US is headquartered in Washington, DC, with offices in Oakland, and Seattle.

This country is in a historic moment : from real threats to the planet, to corporate hijacking of our democracy and democratic rights, to attacks on our core social values. We are at a juncture about what kind of society and world we want to live in. Decisions made now will have repercussions long into the future. In this moment, we need transformational leaders who understand the power of mobilizing people to affect change. Greenpeace US seeks a dynamic leader as its National Campaigns Director. This highly visible person will report directly to the Chief Program Officer and manage the campaigns department. This is a full-time role based in either Washington, D.C. or CA.

The National Campaigns Director will develop and implement the strategy for Greenpeace's strategic campaign areas which include climate, oceans, plastics, democracy among other issues. Our program is aligned on domestic priority goals and critical global projects. Globally we are committed to projects where we can make a critical difference such as winning a global oceans treaty; ending single-use plastics; stopping deep sea mining; and protecting labor rights and ending illegal, unreported and unregulated commercial tuna fishing. The Climate Team is campaigning within the US, focusing especially on California, as well as part of a global campaign team, to make polluters pay the costs of the climate havoc they are wreaking on the planet. The Democracy Team runs campaigns with allies to defend and expand the right to peaceful protest, and stop the use of lawsuits to stifle dissent.

At Greenpeace, we believe in the power of our people. From our staff and volunteers, to our supporters and donors, Greenpeace recognizes that we are all connected in the fight against corporate interests and climate change. We use this people-centered dynamic to drive our campaigns, growing and engaging our supporter base and amplifying the stories of people most affected by the detrimental effects of climate change and corporate greed to bring maximum impact and ensure that the voices of the marginalized are heard. To take our campaigns to the next level, Greenpeace is hiring a dynamic Campaigns Director that can develop and execute impactful people-powered campaigns that center justice and are aligned to Greenpeace's vision of a greener, more peaceful world.

Leading a team of fantastic, passionate campaigners, they will oversee the development and implementation of all campaign strategies, ensuring strategic cohesion and impact across our campaign work, driving resource allocation and prioritization decisions, and scoping potential new areas of work for the organization. The Campaign Director will also partner with Greenpeace's Program leadership to creatively guide GPUS' efforts to build our base of supporters across all facets of our program work in order to shift the balance of power away from corporations and into the hands of people.

The ideal candidate for this role should be a highly skilled, passionate and innovative leader with extensive experience both creating compelling campaign strategies as well as managing teams to deliver related outcomes. This individual will bring a deep understanding and commitment to social and environmental justice, an intersectional analysis and perspective, people power, and a developed analysis of corporate power and structural oppression. They should bring a strong desire to combat climate change, promote environmental justice and drive systemic change. They should also have an understanding and appreciation for people-centered movements, and bring a core understanding of online and offline mobilizing to their work.

The Campaign Director is an exempt, full-time, benefits eligible role that can be based in either Washington DC or San Francisco, CA; and reports to the Chief Program Officer based in CA.
