Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit :

The Department of Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) is housed in the Division of Student Affairs. RecWell fosters comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. We promote lifelong success through meaningful and inclusive programs and resources. RecWell offers comprehensive recreation and wellness programming including : fitness, aquatics, informal recreation, outdoor adventures, competitive sports, Esports, and wellness education. The department strives to provide opportunities that enhance student success.

Position Summary :

The Assistant Director, Fitness is responsible for the strategic planning, development, coordination, and administration of fitness and wellness programs for students, faculty, staff, and the UNC Greensboro community. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality programs and services that enhance student well-being, foster engagement, and support the mission of the university and the department. The Assistant Director serves on the department Management Team assisting with strategic planning efforts and goal setting for the department.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Relevant Master’s degree OR relevant Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of professional experience in fitness or wellness program management.
  • Nationally recognized fitness certification.
  • Current certification as American Red Cross First Aid and CPR / AED for Professional Rescuer (or ability to obtain within first 60 days of hire).
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours in addition to regular University hours.
  • Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates :

    Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR / AED for Professional Rescuers

    certification (or ability to obtain within first 60-days). Current nationally recognized fitness certification.

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Relevant Master’s degree.
  • Experience supervising full-time, part-time staff or graduate assistants.
  • Experience with program management and scheduling software such as Innosoft Fusion, EMS, WhentoWork, and Connect2.
  • Marketing, promotions, and communications experience.
  • Knowledge of budget management and financial planning.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and lead fitness and wellness programs for diverse populations.

    Essential Tasks :

  • Oversee fitness and wellness programs for the Department of Recreation and Wellness.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of fitness and wellness professionals, including full-time and part-time staff, personal trainers, and student employees (including graduate assistants).
  • Direct the daily operations of fitness programs and assist with the development and implementation of signature fitness and wellness events.
  • Conduct group training, recreational classes, and / or group fitness sessions.
  • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance staff skills and competencies. Coordinate in-service training and lead program area specific meetings.
  • Develop, execute, and maintain short and long-term financial strategies including revenue forecasting and planning for operational and capital budgets for the fitness program.
  • Implement departmental risk management policies and procedures for the fitness program.
  • Teach group fitness classes as needed.

    Essential Tasks :

  • Design, implement, and evaluate diverse fitness and wellness programs, including group fitness classes, personal training services, wellness workshops, and special events.
  • Develop goals and learning outcomes for fitness programs. Design and implement assessment of learning for staff and participants through surveys, program evaluations, and other forms of assessment. Regularly reports assessment findings and statistical data pertaining to operations, program participation, and staff development.
  • Oversee outreach and collaboration efforts with campus partners (such as Counseling and Psychological Services, Spartan Well-Being, Healthy UNCG, Kinesiology, Housing and Residence Life) and other departments to create opportunities for the UNCG campus community to engage in physical activity and wellness initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the marketing department to drive awareness and participation in fitness and wellness programming.
  • Keep abreast of current research in the fitness field; obtain and maintain appropriate certifications.

  • Establish and monitor a preventative equipment maintenance and repair program as well as research and recommend new exercise equipment and develop a short- and long-term replacement schedule.
  • Responsible for managing fitness technology systems, such as audio / visual equipment, Fusion, and other fitness software.
  • Maintain the safety and integrity of the weight and fitness spaces.
