Job Description

The applicant shall join the Leidos Gibbs & Cox Survivability Department as an Electrical Engineer to the naval ship design team located in Washington, D.C.   The applicant must work well in a team environment and be willing to learn new skill sets related to Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) as part of the Navy’s pursuit of a state-of-the-art ship design. E3 topics include electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), interference (EMI), pulse (EMP) and vulnerability (EMV).  The candidate will work under an E3 subject matter expert and help provide technical expertise in the analysis, mitigation, and management of electromagnetic interference for the ship design. This role is responsible for ensuring that shipboard systems meet EMC requirements, while using test and analysis techniques to solve complex EMI challenges.

Location : This is a hybrid position that allows for remote work from a home office. However, the selected candidate must be available to work onsite at our Washington, D.C. office at least 2 days per week, or as business needs require.

Primary Responsibilities

Use electrical and / or engineering problem solving techniques to resolve E3 issues.

Learn the basics of MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464 and how they relate to Navy ship design.

Help Streamline EMI qualifications for the ship class and optimize E3 performance.

Obtain knowledge about shielding, filtering, grounding and suppression techniques for mitigating EMI.

Provide ship design guidance for implementing survivability features to restore functionality after sustaining damage and instruct damage mitigation concepts (from an electrical perspective) after a threat event.

Design and execute experiments and field tests to assess EMI impacts and validate mitigation strategies.

Develop processes to minimize top-side EMI capable of disrupting communication systems, navigation equipment and other critical electronic systems.

Brief Navy stakeholders and interdisciplinary teams on technical specifications, analysis, calculations, and design recommendations to ensure compliance with EMI standards and requirements.

Assist with tailoring future EMI, shielding effectiveness and EMP threat protection requirements.

Review MIL-STD-461 Test Procedures / Waivers / Reports and witness EMI qualification testing.

Identify electrical design deficiencies and develop recommendations for solutions.

Conduct classified EMV assessments and briefs.

Support offsite Environmental Qualification Test events at land-based test centers (system level), commercial test facilities (component level) and aboard Navy ships (sea trials).

Perform shipboard inspections to validate designs and proper installation of equipment.

Hands-on experience with electronics (soldering, electric wiring, circuit breakers, transformers)

Familiarity with vendors that provide commercial, or government furnished equipment for use aboard U.S. Navy ships

Previous experience in survivability design for surface combatants and / or submarine ship design(s)

Intermediate knowledge of naval architecture and marine systems

Strong technical writing and written / oral communication skills

At Leidos, we don’t want someone who "fits the mold"—we want someone who melts it down and builds something better. This is a role for the restless, the over-caffeinated, the ones who ask, “what’s next?” before the dust settles on “what’s now.”

If you’re already scheming step 20 while everyone else is still debating step 2… good. You’ll fit right in.

Original Posting : October 29, 2025

For U.S. Positions : While subject to change based on business needs, Leidos reasonably anticipates that this job requisition will remain open for at least 3 days with an anticipated close date of no earlier than 3 days after the original posting date as listed above.

Pay Range : Pay Range $67,600.00 - $122,200.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
