At Charles Schwab, the Banks Retail Credit Risk Management (RCRM) team is a second line of defense (2LOD) risk function with responsibility over the Banks retail lending, including mortgage, home equity and lending secured by securities (i.
e., pledged asset lines or PALs). RCRMs responsibilities include establishing and maintaining underwriting guidelines, providing effective challenge and consultation to the retail lending business units, loan portfolio monitoring and reporting, and performing and / or overseeing credit and collateral reviews of the Banks retail lending portfolio.
RCRM seeks a Senior Manager to perform credit reviews of the loan portfolios and (depending on the candidates experience and interest) participate in the build out of the Banks Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) and High Net Worth (NHW) lending initiatives.
What you are good at
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
- Perform front line and due diligence reviews as part of the 2LOD residential mortgage review process for GSE eligible, QM and non-QM loans and credit exceptions
- Perform and monitor 2LOD reviews for the other following areas :
- External vendor post close quality control reviews for mortgage & HELOC
- External vendor appraisal reviews
- Internal appraisal reviews
- PAL reviews
- Loss mitigation reviews (Short Sales, Foreclosures, Deed In Lieu, Loan Mods)
- Produce and deliver timely, concise, and accurate written findings and documentation of reviews
- Participate in formal monthly oversight meetings with the Bank Credit Team (BCT, a.k.a. the first line of defense or 1LOD) and the Banks outsourced underwriting vendor, articulating 2LOD review findings, helping to identify trends and training needs and recommending process improvements
- Participate in the development of the Banks UHNW and HNW lending initiative, which includes creating underwriting guidelines, pulling data, and developing relevant 2LOD reviews for HNW and UHNW products
- Assist with requests from regulators, internal audit, and other oversight groups
- Assist with other special or ad-hoc projects as assigned
What you have
5+ years of experience, with 3+ years of experience with Retail Credit Risk Management focused on residential mortgage lending.
Loss mitigation experience would be a plus
- General knowledge and familiarity with current mortgage and servicing guidelines and regulations, including GSE underwriting guidelines and QM (Appendix Q) and non-QM regulatory compliance
- Manual underwriting and / or due diligence experience involving jumbo loans including complex tax return analysis
- Demonstrated ability in applying industry expertise and knowledge to solve complex issues for existing processes and new projects
- Previous experience with HNW and UHNW lending a plus
- Strong analytical skills with strategic orientation
- Strong project management skills; ability to organize and manage multiple priorities
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong interpersonal skills, possessing team player and team-building skills
- Bachelors degree in business, finance or economics. MBA or equivalent preferred
- Demonstrated proficiency in Excel and the MS Office application set. SQL or database experience a plus but not required
