We are seeking a GEAR UP Counselor / College and Career Coordinator who will be responsible for the high school and First Year Experience student population services including college planning and career exposure. The Counselor / Coordinator position is primarily responsible for providing academic guidance, presenting high school guidance workshops and presentations at the local high schools, and following up with parents on student progress. This position plays a critical role in supporting the academic success and personal development of high school students through counseling, mentoring, and family engagement. The Counselor / Coordinator would also oversee the mentoring component as it would be critical to the counseling.
This is a grant-funded, full-time position.
Example of Duties :
- Advise students in the areas of academics, high school preparation, and college and career exposure, standardized testing career / life planning, and financial aid in individual and / or group setting.
- Lead the planning, development and coordination of scheduled activities for student participants and their parents.
- Oversee mentoring component curriculum including the hiring, training and supervision of mentors.
- Solicit parental support through general and / or specific informative correspondence.
- Establish and maintain relationship(s) with public school personnel; i.e., school guidance counselors.
- Support recruitment plan and selection of prospective students.
- Conduct individual personal educational planning sessions with program participants to determine college and career readiness at high school locations.
- Collect and prepare student data (i.e., grades, standardized test scores, attendance, evaluations and discipline issues) as required by funding agent and program director.
- Assist in the preparation of reports as requested by the Director of Pre-College Programs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director and / or Asst. Director of College Bound / GEAR UP.
Qualifications :
Master’s degree in Counseling, Education or Student Personnel Services, or a related discipline required.Four (4) or more years prior work experience with educationally underprepared students from an urban environment in an advising / counseling capacity or high school setting or community-based program.Knowledge of computer programs, for example word processing, database management and spread sheets.Ability to work in a team environment coordinating needed student services.Outstanding administrative, organizational, leadership, and communication skills and the ability to interact effectively.Ability to work evenings (Tuesday and Thursday) and weekends (Saturdays / once a month).The completion of a background check will be required for the selected candidate.
Compensation : Salary is determined by a variety of criteria, including but not limited to, previous relevant experience, education level, and certifications. The starting salary for this position is $50,000.
