Overview
We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team at KB Signaling. The primary responsibilities involve addressing design and manufacturing issues with switch machines, critical mechanical devices for railroad track switching. The role includes creating and improving 3D models for casted and machined parts, using Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) scanning tools to compare actual parts to models, and working with our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system to analyze Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and implement Engineering Change Orders (ECOs). The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative, multi-site team environment, contributing to innovative solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and performance in our Switch Machine products.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate and resolve design flaws, manufacturing defects, and performance issues in switch machines, including forensic analysis of failed components.
- Develop and refine 3D models for casted, machined, and assembled parts to enhance manufacturability and functionality using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar CAD tools.
- Use Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) scanning tools to compare physical parts to 3D models, ensuring dimensional accuracy and identifying discrepancies for quality control and design improvements.
- Utilize the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system to analyze Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), evaluate proposed changes, and implement Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) to update designs, documentation, and manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across multiple sites to conduct simulations, stress analysis, and material selection for mechanical components.
- Create and maintain technical specifications for switch machine systems, ensuring compliance with railroad industry standards and safety regulations.
- Participate in design reviews and prototype testing to identify and mitigate potential issues.
- Support manufacturing processes, including on-site support at Warrensburg, MO.
- Provide field support for issue investigation and resolution, including occasional travel (up to 20%) to customer sites or supplier sites.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field). At least 3 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, preferably in the railroad, manufacturing, or heavy machinery industries.Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software (AutoCAD and SolidWorks preferred).Experience using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems to manage Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and implement Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).Strong knowledge of machine design principles, materials science, stress analysis, and manufacturing processes for casted and machined parts.Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multi-site, team environment.Ability to adapt to evolving business needs.Willingness to travel to Warrensburg, MO, on a weekly basis as necessary to fulfill job duties.Willingness to travel (up to 20%) for customer support.Preferred Qualifications
Experience with railroad signaling equipment, switch machines, or rail vehicle systems.3D printing experience.Experience using Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) scanning tools for dimensional analysis and quality control of manufactured parts.Prior experience with PLM tools (Enovia, PTC Windchill, or similar).Note : At this time, we are not able to offer immigration sponsorship for new hires. All applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for current or future employment-based visa sponsorship.
