Responsibilities
The Waddler Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for toddlers ages 1–2 years. This role includes assisting with daily routines, helping implement curriculum activities, ensuring each child’s well-being, and maintaining compliance with state licensing regulations. The Assistant Teacher works as part of a team to promote learning, independence, and positive social interactions.
Duties
The core duties of the Waddler Assistant Teacher follow, but these are not intended to be all-inclusive. Duties may change as needed to meet PELC’s needs.
- Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing daily curriculum activities that promote exploration, language development, motor skills, and social interaction.
- Prepare and organize classroom materials for lessons and activities.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and child-safe environment at all times.
- Support smooth transitions between activities, meals, naps, and outdoor play.
- Assist in supervising and engaging toddlers during active play, circle time, and group activities.
- Help with feeding, diapering, dressing, and supporting early self-help skills such as using cups and utensils.
- Encourage emerging social skills, including sharing, turn-taking, and using gentle hands.
- Model and reinforce positive behavior through age-appropriate guidance.
- Greet parents warmly at drop-off and pick-up times.
- Share brief, positive updates on children’s daily activities, referring more detailed questions to the Lead Teacher.
- Support the center’s commitment to building strong, trusting relationships with families.
- Follow health and safety protocols, including frequent handwashing and sanitizing toys and equipment.
- Monitor children closely to ensure safe play and interactions indoors and outdoors.
- Report any accidents, incidents, or concerns promptly to the Lead Teacher or Director.
- Work cooperatively with the Lead Teacher and other team members to ensure smooth classroom operations.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities as required.
- Be flexible and willing to help in other classrooms when needed.
Qualifications
MERIT Profile RegisteredMinimum Age : 18 yearsExperience : A minimum of six months in childcare.Education : High school diploma or GEDECE Initial Certificate (12 ECE credits)→ Must be completed by August 1st 2026 or within 5 years of hire.Associate degree or higher in ECE or related field→ PELC requires their Assistant teacher to take a minimum of one class per quarter to complete their Associate Degree in ECE.Approved alternative qualificationsCertifications : Current CPR / First Aid, Food Handler’s Permit, 30 Hours STARS,and state-required training (Safe Sleep, Mandated Reporter).Warm, caring personality with a passion for working with children.Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and engage in floor-level activities.Good communication and teamwork skills.Or education per DCYF that qualifies for 30-Hour STARS training exemption.Work Schedule
Full-time, Monday–Friday (hours to be determined).8 hours shiftOccasional evenings or weekends for events or training.Benefits
