Job description

JOB SUMMARY :

The primary duties of this position are to perform phlebotomy and limited health care services procedures to enhance total patient care in the Clinic. The Health Care Services Technician performs all routine diagnostic test using standardized medical health care services supplies, equipment, and kits. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN); they will oversee health care services supply inventory, external log surveillance and health care services quality control testing. The Health Care Services Technician will perform in the scope of a Medical Assistant (MA) adhering to the Medical Board of California scope of practice; responsible for following all clinical protocols / guidelines, objectives, philosophy, and personnel policies of Community Health Systems, Inc. (CHSI).

DESCRIPTION OF KEY FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Will smile; speak in a courteous and friendly manner with patients, visitors and staff members.

2. Responsible for participating in quality improvement projects / activities and accountable for quality control in the Health Care Services department.

3. Reports to the Registered Nurse for clinically related duties. Reports to the Clinic Administrator for administrative related duties

4. Verifies test requisitions by comparing information in EHR; bringing discrepancies to the attention of the RN.

5. Verifies patient by reading patient identification.

6. Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.

7. Performs all in-house CLIA waived testing

8. Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.

9. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.

10. Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring using assays kits by collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.

11. Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes

12. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing station, or reference health care services; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.

13. Completes clinically related tasks as delegated by the RN / Providers.

14. Follows all clinical protocols / guidelines and Universal Precautions.

15. Supervises and orders Health Care Services supplies and inventory.

16. Per Providers order and / or under "standing orders" with the supervision of the RN, MA performs clinical procedures within the California MA scope of practice.

17. Works with the IT and Informatics department to update system codes.

18. Oversees E-trailer updates with Health Care Services venders.

19. Monitors communications with LabCorp and Quest Lab regarding missing information and coding

20. Returns calls to patients and documents all communications in EHR; follows guidelines of CHSI patient communication protocol. Maintains HIPAA compliance

21. Participates in training as directed / required by the Director of Nursing / RN to provide improved patient care such as learning evidence-based approaches to self-management support, proactively addressing the needs of patients / families in the community, maintains cultural competency, and clear and courteous communication.

22. Maintains a safe, clean, and stocked environment at all times. Notify RN of any area or equipment that needs repair.

23. Handles emergencies appropriately and seek qualified help when required per CHSI policy and protocols.

24. Chaperones the patient with the Provider as required by policy.

25. Completes all required charting. Reviews Providers orders and ensures orders followed / completed.

26. Obtains patients' signatures on all forms where required.

27. Surveils outstanding / unreported health care services values. Obtains values and reports abnormal to Provider / Nurse Team

28. Reviews Rosetta Tank files and updates patients' records when required

29. Scans patients' paperwork in EHR as required.

30. Completes daily calibration logs as required by the RN.

31. Translates for patients and Providers as necessary.

32. Serves and protects CHSI by adhering to professional standards, policies, procedures, federal, state, local requirements and OSHA standards.

33. Enhances the Health Care Services department by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

34. Performs all other duties as directed either formally or informally, verbally or in writing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred.
  • Possess strong customer service skills in both written and verbal communication, with the ability to interact and negotiate with co-workers, management, vendors and others as necessary.
  • A high standard of professionalism, professional ethics, and conduct, is expected in speech, manner, attitude, and appearance at all times.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to deal effectively with changing situations and stressful environment.
  • Ability to perform tasks related to physical activity to complete the responsibilities of the position.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION :

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • (Back Office) Medical Assistant Certificate required from an accredited school
  • Current BLS Certificate required and must be maintained
  • Venipuncture, Injection and Phlebotomy Certifications required
  • One year or more of MA experience preferred
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience preferred
