Cemetery Sexton & Facilities Maintenance Specialist

The City of Highland is seeking a dedicated professional to join our Public Works team as a Cemetery Sexton and Facilities Maintenance Specialist . This is a unique opportunity to lead a small team, ensure the peaceful and beautiful upkeep of a sacred space, and support essential community services.
About the Role
In this dynamic position, you will be the heart of our cemetery operations. You'll oversee all daily activities, from coordinating burials and assisting families with compassion and respect to managing the upkeep of the grounds. This is a hands-on role where you will be responsible for turf management, equipment operation, and irrigation systems . You'll also take on a leadership role, supervising a seasonal worker and helping to manage the cemetery budget.
During the off-season (approximately 25% of the time), your expertise will be put to use supporting our public works team with essential facilities maintenance . This includes a variety of semi-skilled duties in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building repairs.
What You'll Do :
Lead Cemetery Operations : Oversee daily activities, schedule burials, and ensure accurate grave locations.
Customer Service : Provide compassionate and respectful assistance to families, funeral homes, and visitors.
Grounds & Equipment Maintenance : Perform and supervise the mowing, watering, aeration, and fertilization of the cemetery grounds. Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, including a backhoe, dump truck, mowers, and more.
Facilities Support : Assist with routine maintenance and repairs on city buildings, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general upkeep.
Budget & Administration : Monitor the cemetery budget, make recommendations for capital improvements, and coordinate with the City Recorder on burial plot sales.
Qualifications :
High school diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in cemetery and / or parks maintenance, with an additional year of general maintenance experience.
A current Utah Commercial Drivers License or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
Proficiency in operating equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, and various groundskeeping tools.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
The ability to lift and carry loads in excess of 75 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks both indoors and outdoors.
Work Environment :
This position requires a commitment to on-site work and is not eligible for remote work. This position is on a 5 day a week, 8 hours a day schedule. Days to be determined with superintendent. Weekends and Holiday work may be required. The role may require compensated on-call rotations and the ability to respond to the work site within one hour for emergencies. Candidates must be able to pass a background check, human performance evaluation, and drug screen.
