  • Job Summary

    The Dean of Academic Affairs is a key member of Glendale Community College's leadership team, responsible for advancing academic excellence and student success through a balance of strategy and operational execution. This position oversees a broad portfolio that includes instructional programs, early college initiatives, and academic support services such as testing and tutoring. The Dean leads with a collaborative, data-informed approach to program development, assessment, and continuous improvement.

    The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable setting direction at the strategic level (aligning programs with the college's mission, strategic plan, and student success goals) and driving operational effectiveness (ensuring that scheduling, program review, and daily operations run smoothly and efficiently). This role requires a leader who is person-centered, solution-oriented, and committed to building relationships across the college and with external partners to create pathways that promote student learning, persistence, and completion.

    This will be an on-site position, offering the opportunity to collaborate face-to-face with passionate colleagues, engage directly with campus stakeholders, and immerse yourself in the campus community.

    Essential Functions

    Strategic Leadership & Academic Planning - 30%

  • Provide leadership within a shared governance model to guide the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and academic support services.
  • Ensure programs and services are aligned with the College mission, accreditation requirements, state and district policies, and strategic goals.
  • Lead collaborative strategic planning efforts with department chairs, faculty, and staff, using data to inform program growth, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Operational Excellence & Data-Driven Improvement - 25%

  • Oversee program review, assessment of student learning outcomes, and other instructional initiatives.
  • Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) related to student access, retention, success, and completion.
  • Work with academic departments to implement data-informed interventions, refine course scheduling, and optimize utilization of resources.
  • Faculty & Staff Development - 20%

  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and retention of residential faculty and staff.
  • Coordinate professional development to enhance teaching excellence and foster innovation in pedagogy and student support.
  • Participate in and support department chair leadership development and evaluation processes.
  • College & Community Engagement - 15%

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to develop higher education pathways, including dual enrollment, university transfer, and workforce partnerships.
  • Represent GCC and Academic Affairs on college councils, district committees, and community boards.
  • Serve as an advocate for programmatic excellence.
  • Budget, Compliance & Special Projects - 10%

  • Manage budgets and ensure compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
  • Seek and support external funding opportunities (i.e., grants, partnerships) to expand programs and services.
  • Address student concerns related to instruction and academic support services.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications for Academic Pathway :

    Master's Degree in a teaching field related to area(s) of assignment and four years of experience in an academic leadership and / or supervisory role in higher education, and three years of teaching that includes curriculum / coursework development. Examples of academic leadership / supervisory experience includes : division / department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance. No degree equivalency.

    Desired Qualifications

    A. Doctoral degree in a recognized academic field of study from an accredited college or university

    B. Three (3) or more years of full-time teaching experience in the community colleges

    C. Five (5) or more years of leadership experience serving as a dean, or program director, or department chair, or similar leadership position

    D. Demonstrated experience of future focus approach to academic leadership through evidence-based decision making

    E. Experience identifying external opportunities to support college programs through community partnerships, grants, and / or intergovernmental agreements (IGA)

    F. Demonstrates cross-institutional collaboration to achieve institutional goals

    G. Experience in leading change management strategies in a higher education environment
