SUMMARY :

Under general direction, provides broad range of library services to all ages at a Library Branch.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

  • Greets and assists customers who come in or contact the Library.
  • Interviews customers to determine the type of information they require; identifies and locates required information or materials;

instructs customers on the use of library resources; prepares responses, and communicates information to customers.

  • Recommends appropriate materials in accordance with age, requests, and / or interests / needs; creates finding guides and resources for use by customers.
  • Plans, prepares, and presents classes, tours, programs, and events to meet the needs of the patrons and the objectives of the library;

serves as host and / or acts as trainer.

Develops and modifies promotional materials to be used in awareness of events; conducts analysis of events and surveys to determine possible future changes;

and selects materials and media to use in events : i.e. books, DVD / video, crafts etc.

  • Creates and maintains digital resources / content; reviews databases for continued inclusion or addition to Library resources.
  • Instructs patrons on use of internet, ebooks, databases, and other resources to locate additional information.
  • Connects with community organizations and providers of programs and classes to identify opportunities for collaborations with the community.
  • Participates in Community Outreach events; represents the Library by speaking to community groups, and meeting potential library partners.
  • Monitors collections for accuracy and accessibility; recommends materials for removal / repair; creates displays and guides to increase usage and awareness of Library resources.
  • Helps coordinate the activities of volunteers and library staff; serves on library staff teams and committees.
  • Assists in a variety of library operations including circulation, facilities, and customer service routines. Provides instruction and information sessions on library equipment, and services.
  • Tracks trends in library services and participates in professional development activities such as self directed learning, webinars, and meetings.
  • Monitors customer's behavior in the Library and reminds them of Library policies as required to ensure that the resources of the Library are fully accessible to all patrons.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition; ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

QUALIFICATIONS :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

Education and Experience :

Master's Degree in library science, or a closely related field; AND one (1) year of public service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

  • Library reference sources and subject background for collection development and patron services.

  • Principles and techniques of preparing effective written informational or educational materials.
  • Records management principles and practices.
  • Techniques for dealing with individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
  • Principles and techniques of making effective oral presentations.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment; correct business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED :

Under General Direction - Incumbents at this level have considerable latitude in the application of departmental policy, and they follow general guidelines or professional and administrative standards in accomplishing assignments.

They are responsible for planning and organizing their own workload, but ordinarily cannot change methods of their assigned work unit, established operations, or departmental policy without supervisor approval.

Supervision is minimal, indirect, and usually limited to technical oversight.
