Environmental Management Service Position
The position is located within Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS). The primary mission of the healthcare system is to provide care to improve the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation. All program elements of EMS are focused on providing services that support direct patient care. The Environmental Sanitation Program consists of environmental sanitation, waste management, and textile care processing.
Major duties include but are not limited to : This position is delegated responsibility to exercise sound technical judgment, rendering decisions concerning the activities of the environmental sanitation program. Informs the Assistant Chief, EMS of decisions, which may be controversial in nature. Work is evaluated in terms of results achieved and normally recommendations are accepted without change. Assists in the direction of a large service that requires a coordinated effect to impact every area of the healthcare system. Responsible for compliance with TJC, EPA, OSHA, VA and other federal regulations. Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and monitoring work plans for staff utilization and work distribution among the workforce. Responsibility for instruction and supervising employees in work operations and conducts inspections of work in progress and completed to ensure cleaning and sanitation objectives and standards have been met. Ability to plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capacities of the employees. Changes work plans, makes decisions for work assignments, and methods as necessary to reduce or control costs, and to accomplish the work of the facility as effectively as possible. Checks the work of subordinates and evaluates the work for completeness, compliance with procedures and instructions, and sanitation quality standards set forth by the Chief and Asst. Chief, EMS. Reports to the Asst. Chief, EMS any unscheduled delays in activities that would affect service operations. Investigates work related issues for resolution. If higher-level management involvement is required, will make recommendation for solutions. Interviews candidates for positions in the unit and recommends appointment, promotion, or reassignments to such positions. The incumbent selects employees from a list of qualified applicants. Interprets the EMS Sanitation Operations Procedure guide in the accomplishment of assigned responsibilities. Supervises the daily operations and functions of the Housekeeping Aid employees for the Environmental Care Unit (ECU) sections.

Physical Requirements : The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust, and debris.
