Firefighter Position
Under supervision performs work related to fire suppression, fire prevention education, rescue, hazardous material, and emergency medical services.
Attends required training courses to maintain skill proficiencies. As outlined by training officer. Performs tasks at emergency medical scenes as an EMT; conducts initial medical assessments; communicates with physicians and other medical professionals; administers pre-hospital medical attention according to Basic Life Support guidelines; insures compliance with State Public Health Laws during medical care and treatment administration. Responds to calls for fire suppression, rescue, hazardous material response and other emergency and non-emergency functions and activities; selects appropriate firefighting equipment in controlling and extinguishing fires; lays and connects hoses; holds nozzles and directs fog or water streams; raises and climbs ladders; ventilates burning buildings; gains access to buildings as necessary to assist fire victims. Receives reviews, prepares and / or processes various documents including incident reports, witness statements, fire education / presentation materials, maps, inspection forms, ordinances, specifications, technical study reports, expense reports, various other records, reports and correspondence. Enter data such as daily activities, hydrant testing and hose testing. Perform pre-incident planning. Ensure the station and equipment is clean and in working order. Interact with the public during non-emergency situations including but not limited to blood pressure checks, station tours, school based public education and CPR classes. Perform physical fitness training daily. Understand and use computer software in relation to the job such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other such software.
Education and experience : High School Education or Equivalent; and, up to 6 months of experience; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Licenses and certifications : Necessary.
Firefighter I & II, Valid Alabama Driver's License with Vessel Endorsement, EVOC, Hazardous Materials A&O, NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800, Current Licensed NREMT-Basic, Current CPR Card, Apparatus Operator-Pumper. Desirable : RT : Rope, Fire Officer I, Hazardous Materials Technical, NREMT-Advanced, Apparatus Operator-Aerial, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Live Fire Instructor In Charge, USLA Open Water Life Guard Certification, Public Fire & Life Safety Educator I, Airport Firefighter.
Important Job Functions : Provide fire protection and EMS services as a regular function and at special events. Maintain vehicles and equipment in readiness state. Conducts maintenance and upkeep of fire station, vehicles and grounds. Detailed cleaning of vehicles and equipment (wash / wax, etc.). Detailed cleaning of Fire Stations (dust, sweep, mop, clean / wax as needed, clean bathrooms including showers, etc.). Assist other City Departments with special projects and training. Performs other related duties as assigned.
