Job Title : Surgical Technologist (Surgical Tech)\nJob Summary : \nA Surgical Technologist, also known as a Scrub Tech or Operating Room Technician, is a healthcare professional who assists in surgical operations. They work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other medical personnel to ensure surgeries are carried out safely and efficiently.\n\nKey Responsibilities : \nPreoperative Duties : \n\nPrepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and equipment.\n\nEnsure all tools are sterilized and functioning properly.\n\nAssist in prepping patients for surgery (e.g., sterilizing the incision site).\n\nIntraoperative Duties : \n\nPass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.\n\nMaintain a sterile field to avoid contamination.\n\nAnticipate the surgeon’s needs and respond promptly.\n\nOperate or assist with equipment such as suction machines or retractors.\n\nPostoperative Duties : \n\nCount sponges, needles, and instruments to ensure none are retained in the patient.\n\nDispose of used supplies and sterilize equipment.\n\nAssist with applying dressings and transferring patients to recovery.\n\nAdministrative / Support Tasks : \n\nMaintain surgical logs and inventory.\n\nOrder and restock supplies.\n\nSupport operating room cleanliness and safety protocols.\n\nQualifications : \nCompletion of an accredited Surgical Technology program (typically a diploma, certificate, or associate degree).\n\nCertification through NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) or NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) preferred or required based on state.\n\nBasic Life Support (BLS) certification often required.\n\nStrong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and ability to remain calm under pressure.\n\nLicensing and Certification Requirements by State (U.S.) : \nState\tCertification or Licensure Requirement\nMandatory Certification\t\nTexas\tCertification required (CST through NBSTSA).\nIndiana\tMust be certified unless grandfathered.\nSouth Carolina\tCertification required.\nTennessee\tMust be certified or currently enrolled in an accredited program.\nIdaho\tCertification required.\nNevada\tMust be registered and certified.\nNew Jersey\tMust be certified (CST) unless grandfathered.\nOregon\tRegistration and certification required.\nVoluntary or Not Required\t\nCalifornia\tNot required, but many employers prefer it.\nFlorida\tNot required by state law.\nNew York\tNot required, but employers often require certification.\nIllinois\tNot mandatory, but preferred by employers.\nGeorgia\tNot required, certification preferred.\nNote : Always check with the state licensing board or health department for the most current regulations, as requirements may change.
