Position Summary
The University of New Mexico’s Center for Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) serves as the New Mexico State Demographer’s Office and liaison to the . Census Bureau. We provide accurate, impartial population data and objective analysis to support government agencies, lawmakers, and the public in making informed, data-driven decisions.
GPS is seeking a Student Data Analyst to collect, organize, and analyze data related to Group Quarters living facilities in New Mexico.
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Collecting data on Group Quarters populations—such as those in nursing homes, correctional facilities, and college dormitories—from a variety of sources including direct telephone outreach.
- Organizing collected data into comprehensive spreadsheets or databases.
- Researching facilities using web-based sources and direct outreach via email and phone.
- Gathering and analyzing data from the . Census Bureau and other relevant datasets.

Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM. Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Preferred Qualifications
-Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
-Experience working with data from the . Census Bureau
-Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS 10, or QGIS
-Exposure to programming languages such as Python, R, SAS, SQL
-Knowledge of New Mexico’s geography and cultural landscape
-Strong interpersonal and communication skills
-Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team
-Must be comfortable making phone calls to relevant organizations
