The Johns Hopkins University Office of Vice Dean for All Children's Hospital (OVD) is seeking to hire a Laboratory Technician .

The Laboratory Technician primary focus in the Nagy laboratory is to study epigenomics of cell type specification and the role of macrophages in tissue regeneration, metabolism and tumor growth and metastasis.

The individual in this role will assist in experiments in these research areas and help with general lab needs. The lab technician is expected to have some knowledge of cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques (PCR, Western blot, molecular cloning).

This position will report directly to the lab manager for day-to-day operations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs routine lab duties such as preparing buffers and stocking lab supplies.
  • Collect data and enter / organize mouse information into Excel spreadsheets.
  • Perform genotyping on tissue samples.
  • Perform qPCR or western blot experiments on cell or tissue samples.
  • Carry out in vitro cell culture.
  • Assist other lab members in preparing or carrying out similar experiments.
  • Run lab tests and conduct measurements under established protocols and under supervision.
  • Report problems in completion of routine laboratory processes.

Hours of work may vary from week to week depending on experiment needs.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, qPCR, and western blotting.

Physical Requirements

  • Employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for up to 40% of the time.
  • Employee is required to operate small laboratory tools that require manual dexterity.
  • Prolonged vision requirements include viewing computer screen, paper reports / documents, charts and results.
  • Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
  • May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory).
  • May be required to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions / lifting aides (example : supply boxes).
  • In some areas workspace is limited.

Laboratory Environment

  • Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed.
  • Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy / procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
  • Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area.
  • Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
  • Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, and radiation protocols. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma / GED required.
  • Some coursework in the fields of biology, chemistry, or molecular biology with some prior laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College coursework in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • At least 6 months experience working in a biomedical research laboratory.
  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.

Starting Salary Range : $15.25 - $23.00 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

Schedule : M - F (8 : 30 am - 5 pm)
