Trial Attorney - MHLD Roxbury

The Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) invites applications for a full‑time Trial Attorney within its Mental Health Litigation Division (MHLD) covering civil commitment cases, trials, and a limited number of appellate cases for the Roxbury Commitment Unit. This position is currently a temporary remote assignment until the Unit relocates to a permanent office location.

Overview

The MHLD’s Roxbury Commitment Unit represents clients in civil commitments filed by Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center, HRI Hospital in Brookline, and other facilities in the metro‑Boston area. Attorneys will appear in District Court sessions and Superior Court divisions, and may represent clients in appeals to the Appellate Divisions of the District and Municipal Courts. The role requires travel across the Commonwealth and remote work capability.

Qualifications

• Committed to serving a culturally diverse, low‑income population.
• Eligible to practice law in Massachusetts (member of the Massachusetts bar or licensed in another jurisdiction covered by SJCR 3 : 04).
• All positions require travel; reliable transportation throughout the Commonwealth is necessary.
• Access to a personal computer with home internet sufficient to work remotely.
• Foreign‑language skills that support interaction with limited‑English‑proficient groups (desirable).
• Trial experience in mental‑health cases (preferred).
• Strong interpersonal, analytical, and collaborative skills; able to work independently and in a community‑defense oriented capacity.
