Legal Intern, Fall

The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is seeking Legal Interns for Fall 2025. AVP envisions a world in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and HIV-affected people are safe, respected, and live free from violence. AVP's mission is to empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and support survivors through counseling and advocacy.

AVP has developed a legal program specifically for LGBTQ and HIV-affected survivors of violence and is seeking two law students for our Law Intern Program. Under the supervision of the Staff Attorney and Director of Legal Services, the interns will work directly with LGBTQ and HIV-affected community members who are survivors of violence. Our legal department has a generalist practice, providing services in an array of legal matters such as immigration, family law, housing, and name changes.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Conduct client intakes;
  • Provide support in all phases of litigation including drafting petitions, motions, client correspondences and legal memoranda; conducting legal research; and trial preparation;
  • Maintain records in office database and case files;
  • Provide advocacy for clients;
  • Participate in internal and external coalitions and committees as appropriate;
  • Refer clients to AVP's Client Services and Community Organizing and Public Advocacy (COPA) services and programs as appropriate.

Program Related

  • Attend weekly supervision with Staff Attorney;
  • Attend in-service trainings and external trainings / seminars as appropriate;
  • Assist with and attend AVP signature events;
  • Other duties as directed by Supervisors.
  • The internship is 10 weeks long. Although the internship is not paid, we will work with law school programs that fund or provide credit to law students.

    Qualifications

  • Completion of two semesters of law school.
  • Demonstrated interest in public interest law.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working to end violence within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities.
