Insight Global is seeking a Controller for a law firm based in Los Angeles, California. In this position you will be responsible to the Managing Attorney and Finance Partner for the day-to-day functioning of the non-legal activities in all departments of the Firm to achieve financial objectives.

You will oversee the Firm’s financial operations and the day-to-day activity in the Accounting Department. Some detailed responsibilities below :

  • Assure that the Partnership, Managing Attorney, Management Committee, and other firm committees receive all appropriate information necessary to accurately reflect the economic condition of the Firm and to carry out the financial management of the firm.
  • Establish & maintain appropriate internal controls to safeguard assets, ensure proper accounting of transaction, and promotes operational efficiency with respect the financial matters within the Accounting Department and the firm.
  • Performs all general accounting functions, including chart of accounts and general ledger, procedural aspect of the billing process, cash receipts and accounts receivable, account payable, fixed assets, petty cash, bank reconciliation and client trust funds.
  • Performs the preparation of the monthly income statement and balance sheet, including all related account reconciliations and monthly close process.
  • Reconciles cash flow and handles cash management, renewals of the Firm’s letter of credit and line of credit. Maintaining adequate compensation balances and management of capital requirements.
  • Prepares and processes payroll upon receipt from the Director of Human Resources.
  • Maintain and ensure accuracy of equity partners capital / draw accounts.
  • Keep adequate records of all aspects of the partnership compensation system.
  • Participating in the development of overall firm accounting, billing, and finance procedures, policies and internal controls, and ensuring timely compliance with protocols set by the Managing Attorney, Management Committee, and the Partnership.
  • Prepare & ensure the timely filing of all tax filings : Partnership annual tax returns, K-1s, 1099s, Business Tax, Property Tax, Sales & Use Tax.
  • Coordinating with outside accountant preparation of trial balance, related documents for filing of State & Federal Partnership returns & K-1s and other tax related issues as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Human Resources, prepare and ensure timely renewal of the benefits insurance programs : health, dental, life & LTD / STD.

Makes recommendations for changes to modify coverage as appropriate to reduce costs, and analyze new programs as needed.

  • In collaboration with the Administrative Paralegal, prepare and ensure timely renewal of firm insurance policies : professional liability insurance, general business coverage, workers compensation, fiduciary coverage, director & officers coverage, cybersecurity coverage, group umbrella coverage, and other miscellaneous policies.
  • Oversee and review new vendor contracts and renewals including collaboration with Director of Human Resources for facilities management.
  • Assess billing rates and prepare recommendations regarding annual billing rate adjustments.
  • Manage and maintain banking relationships and other external parties with whom financial information is exchanged.
  • Continually monitors the financial system for inequities and makes appropriate recommendations.

Must-haves

  • 5-7 years of proven working experience as Accounting Manager, Finance Manager, or Controller
  • Strong understanding of all accounting functions, ensure compliance and consistency in policies and procedures.
  • Skilled to take initiative across core accounting areas including :
  • treasury, cash management and reporting; billing; collections and accounts receivable; accounts payable, client pass through expenses and employee expense reimbursements;

general accounting, trust accounting and reconciliations; and support for payroll, financial analysis and reporting.

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite software
  • Positive team player, independent self-starter, takes direction well and accepts a challenge
  • Professional attitude and excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate good judgment and discretion

Plusses :

  • Lease and contract knowledge preferred
  • Previous law firm experience preferred.

Salary : 120k-160k
