Position Summary

The Safety Manager will develop, implement, and manage company safety and environmental policies, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws. This role will provide leadership in fostering a culture of safety across shipyard operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Your primary duties and responsibilities would consist of the following

Own the Safety Management System (SMS) : policies, procedures, training, and continuous improvement (aligned to ISO 45001 principles).

Ensure shipyard compliance : hot work, confined space, LOTO, fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, electrical (NFPA 70E), and hazard communication.

Plan and conduct risk assessments / JHAs for high-risk work (blasting / painting, tank / void work, work aloft, crane / lifting, energized work).

Lead daily field presence : job walk-throughs, audits, and coaching; stop-work authority and rapid response to unsafe conditions.

Coordinate confined space and hot-work controls with the Marine Chemist and Shipyard Competent Persons; maintain permits and logs.

Investigate incidents and near-misses using root-cause methods; drive corrective and preventive actions and verify effectiveness.

Manage industrial hygiene activities (air / noise sampling via internal / third-party resources) and medical surveillance coordination.

Develop and deliver safety training and toolbox talks for multi-shift crews; track qualifications and retraining cycles.

Maintain OSHA records (300 / 300A / 301) and required reports; support regulatory inspections and customer audits (e.g., NAVSEA Standard Item safety expectations).

Partner with union leadership and the joint safety committee; foster participation and fair, consistent accountability.

Oversee PPE programs, contractor / subcontractor safety onboarding, and site access controls (e.g., TWIC where applicable).

Participate in emergency preparedness : drills, incident command roles, spill response coordination, and severe-weather plans.

Support bid reviews and project planning with safety input, staffing, and equipment needs.

Qualifications

Experience : 5–8+ years in safety leadership within ship repair, shipbuilding, heavy industrial, marine construction, or equivalent high-risk environment.

Education : Bachelor’s in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience considered.

Certifications :

OSHA 30 (Maritime strongly preferred; Construction / General Industry acceptable).

Shipyard Competent Person (or ability to obtain within 6 months).

First Aid / CPR / AED (current or within 60 days).

HAZWOPER 24 / 40 a plus; CHST / ASP / CSP / CIH a plus.

Skills : Strong field presence, practical risk assessment, incident investigation, and training delivery; excellent communication across craft, supervision, and customer representatives; data-driven with solid documentation habits.

Other : Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain / maintain TWIC; willingness to work off-shifts / weekends as needed for project schedules.

Physical Requirements

Works in shipyard, onboard vessels, and shop environments; climbs ladders and scaffolds, enters confined spaces, and uses required PPE including respiratory protection.

Must be able to stand / walk most of the shift and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
