Sr. Database Administrator

Contract / Contract to Hire

Atlanta, GA

Job Summary :

We are seeking a highly experienced Mainframe Database Analyst or Database Systems Programmer with at least 8 years of experience in z / DB2. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in mainframe database technologies, including z / DB2, IMS DB / DC, and / or ADABAS. This role is critical to the performance, availability, and modernization of our database systems and involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to support and implement technologies aligned with business goals.

Key Responsibilities :

1. Database Administration & Maintenance :

  • Manage and maintain IBM DB2 databases on the z / OS mainframe platform.
  • Create and manage database objects such as tables, indexes, and tablespaces.
  • Perform data manipulation tasks, including loading, unloading, and reorganizing data using DB2 utilities.
  • Implement and manage database backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.

2. Performance Monitoring & Optimization :

  • Monitor database performance metrics and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Tune databases for optimal performance, ensuring efficient query execution.
  • Use tools such as RUNSTATS to maintain accurate database statistics and improve optimization.
  • 3. Collaboration & Consultation :

  • Maintain effective communication with application teams regarding infrastructure initiatives and roadmaps.
  • Act as a consultant to business users and development teams on database technologies and system enhancements.
  • Collaborate with developers to design and implement schema changes based on application needs.
  • 4. Software & System Management :

  • Oversee external DBA teams and systems programmers during software installation, upgrades, and maintenance.
  • Support service level management, including change, incident, and problem management.
  • Stay current with and implement new database features and software upgrades.
  • Coordinate with external vendors to ensure smooth software transitions and updates.
  • Proactively monitor systems to ensure high availability and resolve root causes of issues.
  • 5. Risk Management & Compliance :

  • Communicate risks to leadership and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Participate in internal and external audit reviews (e.g., SOX compliance).
  • Ensure database systems meet regulatory and security standards.
  • 6. Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity :

  • Contribute to the design, testing, and maintenance of disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • 7. Technology Strategy & Lifecycle Management :

  • Stay informed about evolving database technologies and assess their impact on existing systems.
  • Plan for deprecated features and manage the technology lifecycle of database platforms.
  • Required Skills & Qualifications :

  • Minimum 8 years of hands-on experience with z / DB2, IMS DB / DC, and / or ADABAS.
  • Proficiency with IBM Infosphere Data Replication (IIDR) or similar replication technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of z / Connect Enterprise Edition (zCEE) API frameworks.
  • Expertise in DB2 administration on z / OS, including partitioning, indexing, and performance tuning.
  • Proficiency in SQL, Job Control Language (JCL), and mainframe OS concepts.
  • Experience with database security, compliance, and audit processes.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to resolve complex issues under pressure
  • Experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience managing software upgrades and working with external vendors.
  • Familiarity with ITIL or service management frameworks (change, incident, problem management).
  • Knowledge of multiple mainframe database products, including IMS DB / DC and ADABAS.
  • Education & Certifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certifications in DB2, z / OS, or related database technologies are a plus.
  • Work Environment :

  • Full-time role with participation in on-call rotation and production support.
  • Collaborative work with internal infrastructure, application, and support teams as well as external vendors.
  • Requires strong communication and the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
