Police Cadet

This is a continuous recruitment. We will continue to accept applications until the hiring department determines enough qualified applications have been received. However, we will begin the testing process when a sufficient number of applications have been received and will continue periodic testing after that and per the needs of the Department.

At this time, we have outstanding opportunities available, as we're looking for the "right people" to serve as Police Cadet with the Police Department.

The Huntington Beach Police Department Cadet program introduces young men and women, ages 18 to 25, to the field of law enforcement. This is a part-time job in which the cadet must be enrolled as a full-time student in high school or college at the time of appointment. Work hours are assigned around the student's class schedule. The Cadet program is designed to develop the skills and abilities of young individuals who wish to one day pursue a career in law enforcement. Cadets are provided with the opportunity to work a variety of assignments throughout the Police Department.

Successful candidates, after one-year of employment, are encouraged to apply for the testing process to potential appointment to Police Recruit. Police Recruits are full-time, regular status employees (salary plus benefits package) and attend a local Police Academy.

This is part-time, non-permanent position. Part-time employment does not qualify to receive city benefits, except those required by law. The city does not belong to the Social Security system; however, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.

Examples of Essential Duties

Cadets are provided with the opportunity to work a variety of assignments throughout the Police Department, including, but not limited to, the front desk, jail, sub-stations, training unit, and communications.

The City of Huntington Beach Police Department operates under a community policing philosophy with approximately 220 sworn and 115 civilian positions. It provides its officers opportunities to gain exposure in a wide variety of municipal police activities (e.g., helicopter, K-9, DEA Task Force, Vice, Narcotics, beach detail, and downtown foot beat). It is proud to have its own Crime Lab, and was the first city in the nation to operate a fully computerized Communications Command and Control Center.

Minimum Qualifications

• At time of appointment, applicants must be at least 18 years to 23 years of age (although you may remain in the program up to 25 years of age).
• Currently enrolled in high school or college and carrying a minimum of 12 semester units during the school term with minimum grade point average of 2.0 (9 units if possessing 70 units of college level course work or Associate of Arts degree).
• A valid California Driver's License at time of appointment and good driving record.
• No criminal convictions.
• Good moral and ethical history.

Those applicants best meeting the needs of the City will then participate in the selection process. Each component of the selection process listed below must be passed in order to continue.

Supplemental Information

Public Employee Disaster Service Worker : In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all Huntington Beach city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.

Employees regularly assigned / required to drive a city or personal vehicle in the course and scope of work shall be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice Program due to the performance of field duties that may require operation of a city vehicle.

Common disqualifiers for civilian applicants include illegal use or possession of drugs, motor vehicle operations, arrests, integrity issues, tattoos, and body art. Having been disciplined by any employer for abuse of leave, gross insubordination, or other misconduct may also disqualify an applicant.
