Job description

Job Title : Accounting Officer & Controller

This is an onsite assignment based in our San Antonio office.

Summary :

The Accounting Officer & Controller is responsible for the accounting function, including general ledger accounting, investment accounting, loan and deposit accounting, fixed asset accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable and reporting. The SVP, Controller works closely with the Chief Financial Officer, accounting team, and peer groups to create a culture of excellence in accounting operations, control functions, and reporting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Provide oversight of the accounting function of the bank and subsidiaries, establishing policy, procedures, and internal controls, necessary to achieve the bank's goals and objectives.
  • Manage the team responsible for Reconciliations, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Clearing Accounts and Official Checks.
  • Manage the team responsible for daily and EOM / EOY general ledger processing and EOM / EOY closing process, accountable for regulatory and call report filings.
  • Development, analysis, and interpretation of accounting information to accurately assess results.
  • Prepare EOM / Quarterly / EOY financial management reporting for the bank to include monthly financial statements, financial forecasts, and analysis.
  • Responsible for the Bank's financial and tax reporting accuracy including oversight of the reconciliation process and general ledger and researching and resolving discrepancies within and across departments.
  • Maintain knowledge and assess impacts of current and new GAAP and regulatory accounting standards, tax laws, and overall changes in the bank industry.
  • Lead the preparation of the quarterly call report and various other regulatory reports submitted to all applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate scheduling for annual external audit and quarterly internal audit with Compliance Officer and audit firms; manage audit and exam request list with team to provide requested items to audit firm or examiners in a timely manner; Work closely with audit firms or examiners prior to, during, and immediately after audits and exams to ensure all audit or exam related issues are addressed timely.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with accounting related policies and procedures and monitoring them on a recurring basis for necessary changes or improvements.
  • Coordinate the relationship and deliver information to both internal and external auditors, regulators, IRS, and tax preparers as well as assist in preparation of the reports.
  • Manage pension plan, retiree, and insurance matters with third party vendors.
  • Oversee the vendor contract management including the accounts' payable function, expenses paid and year-end 1099 reporting.
  • Manage month-end procedures and provide reporting to various recipients including, but not limited to, Board Members, Senior Management, and ALCO.
  • Maintain educational and professional expertise through attendance at job related seminars, conferences and workshops and involvement in professional and community groups in leadership positions.
  • Coach and mentor other members of the accounting team to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert on accounting matters.
  • Write reports, business correspondence, policy / procedures, and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, senior leaders, and the Executive Chairman.
  • Participate in industry events, community activities, and bank appointed committees as assigned.
  • Carries out responsibilities in a manner consistent with our values and operating principles, in accordance with policy and applicable laws, and with a commitment to commitment to continuous improvement and process excellence.

  • Qualifications : Education :

    Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or other closely related area of study is required.

    CPA or Graduate Degree in business.

    Required Knowledge / Skills :

  • 7 years professional accounting experience in banking.
  • 5 years management / supervisory experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of banking procedures, policies, and regulations
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Products
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills
