Compensation
$38 per hour
Job Summary
The Quality Control Technician 3 is responsible for sampling, testing, and reporting on construction materials—including but not limited to hot mix asphalt, aggregates, soils, and concrete—to ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards. In addition, this role requires experience in performing specialized laboratory testing to assess material properties and ensure quality assurance. The technician will apply advanced knowledge and technical skills to support accuracy, reliability, and continuous improvement in construction material evaluation.
Main Responsibilities
Work mostly independently
May serve as a senior technician, occasionally overseeing other technicians on high-priority projects
Ensure precision and accuracy in measurements, test forms, and daily reporting
Conduct thorough inspections, identify quality issues, and implement corrective actions
Analyze test results to diagnose causes of nonconformities and recommend solutions
Apply expert knowledge of AASHTO, ASTM, and Caltrans test methods
Maintain familiarity with Green Book, FAA, Caltrans Standard Specifications, and other applicable specifications
Perform specialized testing on hot mix asphalt, aggregates, and soils, including performance tests like Hveem, Marshall, Gyratory compaction, Tensile Strength Ratios, and Hamburg Wheel
Perform aggregate property assessments, including LA Rattler and fine & coarse specific gravity tests
Perform soils testing, such as standard and modified proctors and R-values
Develop, analyze, and optimize HMA mix designs per project specifications
Maintain flexibility for overtime, including nights and weekends, as required
Perform other duties as assigned
Education and / or Work Experience Requirements
Minimum 5 years of related work experience preferred
Some college education preferred
Current Caltrans certifications in HMA and aggregates (JTCP HMA I, HMA II and Aggregate Module preferred) or equivalent certification
Valid CA Driver’s License with an excellent driving record
Skills
Ability to be precise and accurate when taking measurements and completing test forms
Ability to follow direction with excellent follow through within a timely manner
Ability to learn specific QC computer programs
Ability to lift 50 lbs. during various times of the day
Dependable self-starter with good organization skills
Good organizational and problem-solving skills
Good verbal and written communication skills
Legible handwriting
Proficient in all Microsoft Office Products
Proficient math skills
Physical Requirements
Ability to utilize hands and fingers in order to type and carry reports
Ability to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands throughout the workday
Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch
Ability to see clearly or with assistance via necessary correction
Wearing and maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE) required
Frequently exposed to all weather conditions
Frequent exposure to working around moving equipment and machinery
Frequent exposure to dust, airborne particles, etc.
