Job Description

The Mental Health Associate (MHA) will work within Behavioral Health Services, under the guidance / supervision of a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) or Mental Health Professional (MHP).

The MHA will participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team, working with individuals who have dual diagnosis, having both Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities (I / DD) and mental health needs.

The MHA will provide community-based and home-based services focused on mental health recovery, including Community Support (both individual and group) and Case Management.

Direct service will be based on identified treatment plan goals and objectives focused on teaching skills which promote wellness and independence.

The MHA role will also involve interaction with the person’s support network including family members, guardians, natural supports, medical providers, and colleagues.

Marginal Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • As a mandated reporter ensures all allegations, abuse, and neglect are reported as required.

Education / Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Valid driver’s license or State ID.
  • One year experience supporting, educating, and advocating for individuals living with intellectual / developmental disabilities and mental health needs.

  • General knowledge of effective coping skills to help alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health diagnoses.
  • General knowledge of standard office equipment such as computers, copy machines, fax machines, telephone systems, and other telecommunication devices.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office systems and ability to document within program software.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent walking and sitting.
  • Regular reaching, grasping, and standing.
  • Other physical activities related to an office environment.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Work Environment

  • Work may occur in the following settings : home, office, classroom, employment site, group homes, or general community.
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude towards the people EP!C supports, peers, EP!C staff and outside contacts.

Essential Duties

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of mental health diagnoses and provide effective, recovery-based, trauma-informed services and interventions focused on meeting therapeutic goals as defined in the person’s treatment plan.
  • Establish therapeutic rapport, treating all individuals, families, and visitors with kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Compassionately understand and respect differences.
  • Provide active and reflective listening.
  • Provide input into the development of person-centered treatment goals and objectives.
  • Assess, teach, and guide general life skills and activities of daily living.
  • Assess, teach, and guide the use of healthy coping skills to address mental health needs.
  • Assist individuals with constructive use of leisure time.
  • Assist individuals in adapting to and coping with difficulties related to their living environment.
  • Assist individuals with involvement in the community, including coordinating special events and outings as applicable.
  • Meet or exceed direct service expectations by providing recovery-based, trauma-informed Community Support and Case Management services based on therapeutic treatment goals and objectives.
  • Recognize warning signs associated with suicide and how to respond.
  • Consult team and / or supervisor when concerned about an individual’s mental health.
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation in clinical DAP format according to agency policies and rules / regulations of applicable payer sources.
  • Observe and guide individuals’ self-administration of medication, when applicable.
  • Attend all required supervisory and team meetings.
  • Successfully complete all MHA Behavioral Health CBTA competency requirements.
  • Complete all agency training requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPPA requirements.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with policies, procedures, and instruction of supervisor.
