Senior Data Engineer - Capital Markets

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $145,000.00 and $189,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire.

The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

SMBC is in the process of leading a Digital Transformation across our Americas Division as we continue to modernize our technology, focus on our data-driven approach, grow, and plan for the future.

As a result of this expansion, we are seeking an experienced software engineer, with 10+ years of experience to support the design and development of a strategic data platform for SMBC Capital Markets and Nikko Securities Group.

The ideal candidate should have broad knowledge and understanding of Capital Markets, instrument asset classes and strong technical background implementing projects on Azure Cloud.

Role Objectives

• This role will be part of the data strategy team spanning across the SMBC Capital Markets and Nikko securities teams, SMBC Americas Division's broker-dealer and swap-dealer entities.
• This role will be involved in the analysis, design, and development of the data platform, beginning with the establishment of a reference data system for securities and pricing data, and later moving to other data domains.
• This role will require indirect leadership and mentorship of junior team members.
• This role will be part of the SMBC CM / Nikko development team and will need to follow internal developments standards to contribute to the overall agenda of the team.
• Work with business teams, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand business requirements, needs, or process gaps that would be addressed via proposed applications.
• Engage with IT systems architects, database administrators, and cyber security team to meet the back-end functionality demands of the application.
• Partner with graphic artists, user interface designers and front-end engineers to create the front-end interface of the application and optimize user experience.
• Liaise with other technology and development teams as needed to coordinate on the integration of applications with the larger company software ecosystem.
• Participate in periodic development meetings to align development priorities and objectives, assign tasks, and share experiences and challenges with applications under development.

Qualifications and Skills

• 10+ years of software development experience in enterprise applications, preferably in the financial services industry and on data-heavy systems
• Extensive experience on Cloud solutions, specifically in Azure
• Experience with Azure cloud services, Azure Data Factory, Gen 2, Azure Databases, Functions, Databricks, etc
• Strong knowledge of Python, Java or similar high-level server-side languages
• Advanced working SQL knowledge on relational databases, preferably on MS SQL Server and databases on Azure cloud
• Experience designing and architecting distributed systems, containerization, Web API's and gateway management.
• Experience with the DevOps lifecycle (git, Jenkins, etc.)
• Experience with Jira / Confluence
• Experience with REST web services and microservice architecture
• Good understanding of ETL / ELT
• Good understanding of equities and fixed-income instruments
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems preferred.
