Job Summary :
MATBOCK, LLC, a Virginia Beach, VA-based company, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Mechanical Engineer with strong expertise in both product design for injection molding and injection mold design. This role will bridge product development and tooling, ensuring that concepts are manufacturable, efficient, and optimized for production. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including product management, manufacturing, and suppliers to bring high-quality products from concept to market. Experience designing tactical gear and military products for battlefield use is preferred.
Key Responsibilities :
Design plastic components optimized for injection molding, considering part geometry, draft, tolerances, and material selection.
Develop and review injection mold designs (single and multi-cavity, hot runner and cold runner systems, slides, lifters, and inserts).
Perform design-for-manufacturability (DFM) reviews and provide feedback to product development teams.
Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings, including GD&T, BOMs, and assembly documentation.
Conduct tolerance stack-ups and evaluate part interactions within assemblies.
Support prototype builds, tooling kick-offs, mold trials, and validation activities.
Troubleshoot mold and product design issues, proposing cost-effective solutions.
Collaborate with suppliers, toolmakers, and manufacturing partners to ensure designs meet quality, cost, and timeline requirements.
Stay current with advances in materials, mold-making technologies, and manufacturing best practices.
Qualifications :
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
36 years of relevant experience in mechanical / product design, with a focus on plastic injection molding.
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, Creo, or CATIA).
Strong knowledge of injection molding processes, mold construction, and mold design principles.
Hands-on experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, and mechanical drawings.
Familiarity with mold flow simulation software (e.g., Moldflow, Sigmasoft) a plus.
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills :
Experience designing tactical gear and military products for battlefield use.
Experience working directly with toolmakers and injection molding suppliers.
Exposure to secondary processes (e.g., ultrasonic welding, insert molding, overmolding).
Knowledge of common engineering plastics and their behavior in molding applications.
Experience in design validation, testing, and root cause analysis.
