Overview & Responsibilities

Primary function

To assemble and / or dismantle rotors, turbine disc and blade holders, shafts, sleeves, slingers, gears, couplings, etc., mainly by use of temperature differential or shrinking process, and operates dynamic balancing apparatus. Apply bearing / seal materials using static and / or centrifugal methods.

Tools & Equipment

Gas ovens, electric ovens, hot oil pots, acetylene heating equipment, torches, melting pots and centrifugal methods, fixtures, floor pit, measuring devices such as micrometers, scales, gages, hammers, tongs, wrenches, drills, taps, reamers, filed, jib hoist, pullers, air tools, thermometers, tempil sticks, etc., porta power, contractor, controller, induction heater, blade inserting machines, riveting machines, bracker peener, punch press, drill press, pedestal grinder, belt grinder, disc arbors, jigs fixture, various hand tools such as power drills, reamers, blade weighing scales, hydraulic pump kit, steel stencils. Forklift truck, overhead crane and other material handling equipment, or other rotor peening stands, hydraulic ram, air leakage testing equipment, valve seat lapping machine, reamers, dial indicators, arbors, alignment equipment and computer.

Working Procedure

• Receives work assignment and instructions from supervision.
• Works from route sheets, assembly drawings, bill of materials, wiring diagrams, and work instruction written procedures where applicable.
• Receives parts for sub-assemblies in the work area.
• Assembles or disassembles as specified.
• Selects and adjusts fixtures and spacers.
• Heats or chills parts as necessary.
• Drills, taps, reams for set screws or dowels.
• Cools or chills assemblies with air or water and checks dimensions.
• Determines number of heating torches and location of heat application.
• Operates balancing equipment in accordance with procedures.
• Set up by installing proper adapters, bearings, arbors, and adjusting the balancing machine.
• Balances parts in one, two, or three planes.
• Perform the babbitting process as required.
• Perform hot metal duties (including lead, tin, torch work, heat / cooling) as specified.
• Checks surface of material for any condition which may affect coating.
• Directs spray and periodically measures amount of coating.
• Changes spray coat wire and gases as needed.
• Moves material prior to re-application for rework and repair processes.
• Notes malfunctions and makes correction adjustments.
• Uses a job hoist, overhead crane, work saver, or forklift truck to maneuver material.
• Performs crane hooking and unhooking as required.
• Reports production count, time, and data verbally to supervisor or inspector.
• Assist in developing and maintaining departmental procedures and associated process metrics related to process cost, quality, cycle time, and timeliness.
• Wipes tools and keeps work areas clean.
• Maintains good housekeeping by keeping tools, material, and equipment in proper place.
• Reports defective material and equipment to supervision.
• Observes all safety rules.
