Bilingual Community Liaison
Classification Status : Part-Time / No Benefits; $7,500 grant-funded stipend
Position Overview :
The district is looking to increase parent and family involvement in the ELL school community. The goal of this role is to establish effective communication between home and school and improve community outreach.The Bilingual Community Liaison is assigned the responsibility of assisting limited English proficient students, bilingual students, migrant students, and their families in accessing educational resources needed to ensure and maintain students' academic success.The duties and responsibilities of the Bilingual Community Liaison will include in and out of district activities as outlined by the FY26 grant governing guidelines. The Bilingual Community Liaison will be expected to participate in a variety of school wide functions including but not limited to Alumni Night, Homecoming, Walk the Halls, PT Conferences, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Work with Bilingual Liaison team and EL Director / EL Coordinator to help organize and facilitate Bilingual Parent Association Committee (BPAC) meetings throughout the school year.
- Assist the migrant and ELL student body and their families to access all appropriate educational and community services (i.e. food banks, social service agencies, etc.) needed to meet their special needs.
- Inform parents through individual and group meetings of school programs and procedures including testing, graduation requirements, college opportunities and extracurricular activities.
- Keep documentation and accurate records of efforts put forth when communicating with community for purpose of district and state audits. Document student focused communications in PowerSchool logs.
- Provide school to home translation, translate at school conferences, registration and school events (Homecoming parade, alumni events, etc.) when called upon by EL Director and school administration team.
- Attend in-service, workshops, and conferences as assigned.
- Help families in understanding school policies, grading, and attendance procedures.
- Support with understanding graduation requirements, course selection, and scheduling
- Work with families with bus schedules, lunch accounts, and extracurricular sign-ups
- Help families navigate the transcript and transfer process when moving between schools.
- Help with families of students with attendance issues
- Help families understand school notices, report cards, and standardized test results
- Support families in communicating concerns or questions with teachers, counselors, and administrators
- Assist parents in filling out school or district forms.
- Help parents access and use the PowerSchool App.
- Connect families with tutoring or after-school academic support
- Provide guidance on standardized testing (ACCESS, SAT / ACT, State Exams).
- Organize Parent Universities or workshops on school and community topics
- Facilitate small-group meetings to help parents learn about the school system
- Host parent meet-ups to build connections among families
- Encourage parents involvement in PTO, school committees, and volunteer opportunities
- Support families in attenting Parent-Teacher Conferences and other events
- Connect families to local community organizations (cultural centers, libraries, adult ESL classes)
- Share resources for food assistance, housing, employment, and health services
- Collaborate with local colleges / organizations to share information on financial aid, FAFSA, and higher education
- Organize or promote community-building events for families
- Serve as a bridge between families and the school
- Advocate for families when language or cultural barriers create challenges.
- Help teachers / staff understand family needs and cultural backgrounds
- Help parents schedule meetings with teachers, counselors, or administrators
- Assist with setting up technology (email accounts, apps, devices)
- Provide reminders for important school dates and deadlines
- Help families with school registration and re-enrollment processes.
- Other duties as assigned to best serve District 217.
Qualifications of the Bilingual Community Liaison :
Must be fluent in English and a minimum of one second language serving the district particularly in speaking, reading, and writing. Candidates do not need to be fluent in a third language.Must have flexibility to work some evening parent and community events.Experience in the use of technology and the use of Microsoft Office.Strong communication and public speaking and a second language.Must have reliable transportation.Ability to work positively with other parents and district personnel.Ability to take initiative in coordinating and organizing activities and events.Ability to accurately collect, organize and maintain data and information for reports.Have a knowledge of the cultures of the English Language Learners at District 217.Arabic Speaking Preferred
