About the Position:

Description

As an intern in the Maritime department supporting maritime sustainability, zero emissions tracking, and clean freight initiatives, you will gain valuable experience supporting various administrative and operational functions. Your duties may include preparing tracking tools to monitor electricity trends and costs that support policy and project planning decisions, conducting research on technology advancements and funding incentives, and support the drafting of presentations and memos to keep staff apprised of maritime sustainability initiatives. In addition, you may support environmental regulatory monitoring and reporting as it relates to maritime decarbonization initiatives. You may participate in grant funded projects, which will include reviewing grant agreement documents and developing summary reports to facilitate progress reporting and budget tracking. This may include correspondence with other involved departments and stakeholders and creating informational dashboards to facilitate more streamlined reporting. You may contribute to the development of charts, graphs, tables, and other data analytics to document prior, present, and future infrastructure investments and cost estimate forecasts. This internship will give you exposure to maritime sustainability and sustainable development practices, engineering and construction, maritime operational functions, and environmental regulatory compliance.

GENERAL PURPOSE

With general supervision, provides part-time employment opportunities for college level interns to perform job assignments that are closely related to their area of study. Any full-time college or graduate level student may apply for consideration for vacancies.

DISTIGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Total scheduled work hours shall not exceed 25 hours per work week (Monday through Friday). Intern positions do not include benefits and are not eligible to receive paid leave, paid holidays, retirement and/or any type of insurance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

POST GRADUATION

At the discretion of the department appointment authority, Interns may continue to work up to 25 hours per week for up to two years following their graduation.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education, Training and Experience:

Intern : Students currently enrolled as part-time students [generally six (6) – eleven (11) units] or full time students [generally twelve (12) units and above] at an accredited college or university may qualify for the Intern Program. School Enrollment Verifications are required to ensure satisfactory completion of the required units and verify eligibility for any pay increase (step advancement) based on the total number of semester/quarter units completed.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A current, valid California Class C driver's license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.If assigned to perform work at any of the District's maritime facilities you must be able to pass a background check in accordance with current Federal and State requirements.
If assigned to perform work at any of the District's Harbor Police facilities, you must be able to pass a background investigation that includes but is not limited to a polygraph examination.

Recruitment Information

Hourly rate steps depend on the total number of semester/quarter units completed upon hire and while participating in the Intern Program. Interns must submit documentation from the school registrar to verify they have completed the coursework required and to advance to the next step in the pay schedule.
