Position Overview
A Testing Laboratory Technician is a clinical laboratory scientist with a broad knowledge of procedures routinely performed in a medical laboratory and a working knowledge of all procedures performed in a relevant specialty area. The job primarily involves the application of this knowledge through the performance of analytical related tasks using blood or blood products, the correlation of test results and the solution of testing problems, and the continued development of operational skills through daily workload responsibilities.
Essential Functions
Donor Testing :
Performs automated ABO / Rh testing on donor samplesPerforms automated syphilis testing on donor samplesPerforms manual RPR testing on TP reactive donorsPerforms automated CMV testing on donor samplesPerforms automated antibody screens on donor samplesPerforms automated ELISA testing procedures used to detect viral antibodies and / or antigens in donors and / or patientsPerforms automated nucleic acid testing on donor samplesBacterial Detection Testing :
Performs bacterial detection testing on platelet apheresis productsLaboratory Computer :
Uses the LIS to manage donor-testing information generated by automated testing equipmentQuarantining / Discarding Blood Components :
Identifies products that require quarantine or discard due to non-confirming test results and communicates information to the component labEquipment Care :
Performs QC for equipment used in the donor-testing labPerforms calibration of equipment as neededPerforms maintenance procedures as indicated by equipment manufacturer's recommendationsHematology Analysis :
Performs automated cell counts on donor / patient samplesPerforms automated cell counts on manufactured blood components as indicatedMiscellaneous :
Other duties as assigned or requiredMinimum Qualifications
Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Bachelor of Science Degree in a life science plus up to two years' experience in a clinical laboratoryMLT / MT strongly preferredASCP certification required for associate level degrees (MLT)Job related experience is strongly preferredAbility to communicate effectively, tactfully, and courteously to patrons, donors, sponsors, and co-workersDemonstrate a thorough understanding of the methodologies and operating principles used in a blood centerAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and peersPhysical Demands
