Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician works closely with ophthalmologists and optometrists to provide high-quality patient care by performing diagnostic testing, preparing patients for exams, assisting with procedures, and ensuring accurate documentation. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a patient-centered approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet patients, take medical / ocular histories, and record current medications and allergies.
- Measure and record visual acuity, intraocular pressure, pupil reactions, and other preliminary tests.
- Perform diagnostic tests such as :
- Visual fields
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
- Fundus photography
- Topography and IOLs
- Assist ophthalmologists during examinations and minor in-office procedures.
- Administer eye drops and topical medications as directed.
- Educate patients on procedures, treatments, and post-visit instructions.
- Maintain, clean, and calibrate ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR).
- Support clinic flow by preparing rooms, managing supplies, and coordinating patient care.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in health sciences preferred.Previous experience in ophthalmology or optometry setting is highly desirable.Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher credential preferred, but not always required.Strong interpersonal and communication skills.Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.Proficiency with electronic medical records and diagnostic equipment.Skills & Attributes
