Permit Technician I
A Permit Technician I performs a variety of administrative functions, assists Building Safety, Code Enforcement, Floodplain, Grading and Drainage, Planning and Zoning, and Wastewater Division customers and staff, and maintains a general knowledge of the application and permitting requirements for each Division.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
20% Provides customer service to the public by responding to requests for information, answering questions on permit requirements and associated fees; explains policies, procedures, codes, standards, and enforcement; provides assistance to the public within the scope of authority and training; assists the public with preparation of applications for accuracy and completeness.
20% Reviews incoming plans and permit requests for completeness and compliance to regulations; inspects, reviews, and processes documents according to department and division policies and procedures; accepts or rejects applications; calculates and determines permit and application fees; approves and issues permits. Forwards applications and supporting documentation to appropriate staff for review and comment; provides technical information to staff as authorized and alerts staff to potential problems and issues.
20% Creates customer parcel and permit files; enters data information and documents into computer and manual filing systems; compiles and maintains accurate and detailed records; maintains and updates computer files regarding permits and project submittals. Researches and maintains permit and inspection records, plans, and maps; maintains corresponding filing systems and computerized databases; completes public records requests.
15% Schedules inspections based on geographic location, time constraints, and workload. Compiles information for inspectors.
15% Performs a variety of general office duties including assisting customers at the counter, answering telephone calls, corresponding by email and letters, picking up and delivering mail to the post office and distributing mail to staff, and may be required to order office supplies.
10% Receives and processes monies; may be required to prepare and make bank or treasury deposits; may be required to prepare and distribute reports detailing financial activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education / Directly Related Experience Required :
High School Diploma or GED
One (1) year directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
International Code Council Permit Technician Certification or equivalent is required or must be obtained within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Physical Demands :
Sitting for extended periods of time to write documents, records, data entry, operate computers, calculators, or other office tools.
Standing for extended periods of time to attend to customers.
Continuous use of computers and standard office equipment.
Lifting and carrying work-related material, office supplies, and equipment a maximum of 25 pounds.
Dexterity, hand / eye coordination for keyboards, mouse, calculators, special machines, and equipment.
Work Environment :
Incumbents in this position constantly spend time in office environment and lobby customer service / reception area.
Safety Risk Exposure :
Incumbents in this position are generally not exposed to safety risk. Occasionally, may become exposed to telephone verbal abuse by customers or citizens and individuals with high level of emotional distress.
Protective Gear & Safety Manuals :
Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department.
Consequences of Error :
Potential errors can cause inconveniences to other employees, and / or delays in related work areas. Delays of services are possible.
