Director Of Advancing Energy Ecopreneurship

This position has been deemed critical by the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability Dean's Office and is exempt from the hiring pause. This is a two-year fixed term position with the possibility of renewal dependent on programmatic need and budgetary availability. This position is based on Stanford's main campus with consideration given to the option for a hybrid work schedule (partially onsite and offsite), subject to operational need. The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability strives to create a future when humans and nature thrive in concert and in perpetuity. The school is dedicated to creating and supporting a community with the richness of experience and background needed to create solutions that benefit all people, particularly those affected by environmental damage and climate change.

As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the University on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the University develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We work across campus in all seven of Stanford's schools. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people. This role will draw upon expertise within the Institute as well as its expansive networks both on and off campus to provide support for more ecopreneurs.

Stanford Ecopreneurship's mission to increase the number of ecopreneurs at Stanford and beyond, and to provide those ecopreneurs with best-in-class education and support to solve large, complex sustainability challenges. Precourt Institute for Energy is dedicated to student engagement and advancement aligned with the aims of Stanford Ecopreneurship at both GSB and SDSS.

The Precourt Institute for Energy is seeking exceptional candidates to serve as the Director of Advancing Energy Ecopreneurship. This director must have a proven capacity to lead energy ecopreneurship within the Precourt Institute for Energy. Entrepreneurship background and energy industry experience is desired. The DAEE must also be creative and passionate about working closely with students. The Director of Advancing Energy Ecopreneurship will establish strategic vision and lead program for advancing energy entrepreneurship at Stanford. The responsibilities will include leading and applying thought-leadership on energy entrepreneurship and communicating those insights internally and externally. The Director of Advancing Energy Ecopreneurship will establish key partnerships with members of the 150+ faculty affiliated with the Precourt Institute for Energy; 39 student clubs engaged through the Explore Energy program; faculty with aligned interests at the d.school; aligned leaders at the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy; and entities beyond Stanford that can open pathways to advance energy entrepreneurship.

The Precourt Institute aims to activate its Stanford Energy ecosystem to animate interest in student entrepreneurship in energy led by the Director of Advancing Energy Ecopreneurship. Responsibilities of this new role include :

  • Lead strategic vision by developing and executing a strong program and co-curricular student endeavors for advancing energy entrepreneurship at Stanford
  • Lead and apply thought-leadership on energy entrepreneurship communicating insights to stakeholders internally and externally
  • Lead key partnerships with members of the 150+ faculty affiliated with the Precourt Institute for Energy; 39 student clubs; and faculty with aligned interests at the d.school
  • Represent energy ecopreneurship with entities beyond Stanford that can open conduits to advance energy entrepreneurship
  • Serve and advise Precourt Institute Director on strategic fundraising opportunities for energy ecopreneurship and the larger Precourt education pillar
  • Build a strong liaison relationship to represent energy ecopreneurship and be aligned with Ecopreneurship at Stanford and the Doerr School Sustainability Accelerator
  • Build connections and outreach with the Stanford Venture Studio Ecopreneur Circle, the Ecopreneurship Eco-Sprint program, and student clubs
  • Serve as institutional expert for students on evaluating technology venture ideas for strategic energy transitions and pitching opportunities to venture investors
  • Engage and lead graduate students to explore commercialization pathways for sustainability-focused faculty innovations
  • Develop tracking and metric analysis models for innovation explorations and technology commercialization realizations
  • Teach and co-teach courses on topics related to entrepreneurship in energy transitions and sustainability, develop curriculum and co-curricular learning opportunities
  • Be a go-to resource for energy-focused students who seek independent coaching along their entrepreneurship journeys, from initial ideation to launch
  • Expand the number of on-ramps for energy entrepreneurs and their start-ups by helping activate alumni mentors in the Ecopreneurship network
  • Serve as an Innovation Coach for energy-focused Eco-Sprint

Core duties include : Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs; Lead strategic planning for the program / entity; Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders; Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising / funding; Teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and / or advise in the development of curriculum; and / or advise students, coach and mentor clients and program staff. To be successful in this position, you will need : Minimum requirements : Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and / or experience. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources. Knowledge, skills and abilities : Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources. Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization. Ability to oversee and direct staff. Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans. Certifications and licenses : For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs. In addition, our preferred qualifications include : The candidate should have an enthusiasm to work with students and be excited about developing strong, lasting connections with them. Knowledge of Stanford University as a student is preferred but not required. Creativity, passion, and excitement to create a positive, meaningful program for Stanford students to help them navigate their connections with energy on campus - we are here to broaden their experience, to increase their ability to have a positive impact in the world, to support their goals and help steward them towards being good global citizens. Build and nurture relationships across Stanford's energy ecosystem (and with external partners). Serve as a mentor to students, connect them to resources and opportunities, and help them chart a path forward based on their interests.

The expected pay range for this position is $139,741 to $179,496 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
